Danny Rohl explained how he changed formations at half-time of the 3-3 draw between Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

Boro raced into a three-goal lead by half-time and looked to be coasting to victory before a second-half capitulation following Rohl’s double change at the break. Svante Ingelsson scored within two minutes of coming on alongside former Boro loanee Nathanial Chalobah, with the Owls back on level terms and playing against ten men just 16 minutes after the restart.

Having watched his side overrun by Boro in the first half, the key, Rohl explained after, was changing the system, solidifying the spine of the team and nullifying Boro’s midfielders.

Rohl explained: “We changed the shape to a 4-1-4-1 and controlled more their 6s and another in behind them to help us a lot. Before the game, you always try to think what you can do and how a game might play out.

“But yeah, we changed it and it was important that, at half-time, when I expressed my ideas, the players believed in it. I felt from the first minute of the second half. We were front foot and turned the game around.”

The draw for Sheffield Wednesday meant they maintained their positive form of late - with just one defeat in their last eight games now. A game of two halves, Rohl had positive words to say about Boro - which made the comeback all the more satisfying for him, and explained why his side didn’t go gungho looking for a winner after getting back on level terms just moments after Rav van den Berg was sent off and goalkeeper Sol Brynn went off injured.

Assessing the game and result, Rohl continued: “First half we saw what it means to play against a strong and very good team in this league. They showed why they are top six. It maybe opens our eyes to what it means to take that next jump in the table.

“But then in the second half, you saw two things - that we can change things in a game from a tactical side, but also, the biggest thing, that you saw how strong at the moment the belief is within the group. That’s now 15 points this season we’ve gained from behind.

“I think this is incredible and I am very proud of my team. To never give up and get a point against a very, very strong side is outstanding. We had to be cautious at 3-3 with them down to ten men because one mistake and they have the quality to be clinical and punish you. Of course, we try to use any moment we get to score, and perhaps we could have won. But, all in all, we’re happy to get a draw after coming back from 3-0 behind.”
