Danny Rohl has apologised for not shaking hands with Bristol City boss Liam Manning after Sheffield Wednesday's draw with the Robins at Hillsborough.

The Reds twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw and a point at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening to move back within four points of the play-off places ahead of Saturday afternoon's clash with Blackburn Rovers.

Wednesday took the lead early in the first half when Djeidi Gassama turned home Yan Valery's cutback. Though City levelled things up quickly in the second half through Nahki Wells, the Owls almost immediately restored their lead as Di-Shon Bernard scored his second goal of the season.

The Robins' blushes were spared however as Ross McCrorie headed home his first goal in City colours late on in what was a much-improved final 20 minutes or so for Manning's side. The away team even came close to snatching all three points in injury time when substitute Sam Bell rattled the woodwork.

Rohl was visibly frustrated with his side's second-half showing and cut an animated figure in his technical area throughout the game. After the full-time whistle, he was keen to apologise to Manning for not embracing him on the touchline.

"At first I apologise for the opponent's manager," explained the Sheffield Wednesday boss. "I didn't say at the end the handshake. I was a little bit disappointed but I apologise to him. It's a small story, not a big story.

"I think we controlled the game. The first half, we played good football and we deserve to lead. I think until 60 minutes it was a good performance, but the last 30 minutes, it's not acceptable. Too passive, never get pressure on the ball."

Wednesday, like City, remain in the race for the play-off positions this season. The Owls sit level on points with Manning's Reds and only goal difference separates the two sides in the Championship table following Wednesday night's meeting.

There has been plenty of unrest behind the scenes at Hillsborough in recent weeks and that has coincided with a slight dip in form. Rohl's side haven't won any of their last four games in all competitions and have only won one of their last seven.

With 18 games still to play between now and the end of the campaign in May, there is still plenty for both Wednesday and Bristol City to play for in the coming weeks and months. The Owls' manager was keen to emphasise that it is now down to his side to find a way to make this a season to remember.

"At the end of the season when you look back and we say 'it was a nice season, we did some good games, we entertained,' but we could be really close to more," Rohl explained. "This is then hard to take and this should not be at the end of the season where we're looking back and saying there was much, much, much more in it.

"If you end at the end in a position where you say ok, maybe there are some teams better, maybe you can accept it, but when you did everything in this direction. This is what I demand and expect from my players. The commitment is there, and the players feel the same, but to feel and to wish and demand is one part, now it's trying to make the steps. The good thing is for my team is that they are today disappointed, but on Saturday, we will go again and we'll fight again."
