Darwin Nunez sent a huge message to Liverpool fans with his brace to win the points for the Reds at Brentford. In wild scenes in West London, the Uruguayan scored two goals late on and celebrated by holding his shirt aloft.

Nunez has been criticized this season for not scoring regularly enough. Prior to this match, he had only found the back of the net four times but his tally has now swelled to six.

And because of Nunez's heroics, Liverpool has put more pressure on Arsenal ahead of its game with Aston Villa later today. The Gunners kick off knowing only a win will be good enough to restore the previous four-point gap.

"Darwin is a striker we have to use in a certain way and we were not able yet to bring the best out of him this season," Slot said in the build-up to this match. And even before his two goals, Nunez had missed a couple of chances and caused Trent Alexander-Arnold to fume at him for shooting from distance when he should have passed.

But then he popped up with what could be a huge moment in Liverpool's season. The Reds had 37 shots in total against Brentford but needed Nunez to come off the bench and save the day.

The Uruguayan will hope to put together a run of form now with Lille to come in the Champions League on Tuesday. So far in his Liverpool career, Nunez has not really managed to kick on when he has had big moments but must now prove that he can.

With Diogo Jota injury-prone and Luis Diaz not quite as convincing in the middle compared to when he first moved there, there should be chances for Nunez to take. Ahead of the summer when a big call could be coming on his future, he will need to take them.
