Darwin Nunez has been told he might go down as a Liverpool legend if his goals against Brentford on Saturday prove to be decisive in the Premier League title race.

Nunez has faced plenty of criticism since joining the Reds in 2022, and that criticism has intensified this season, but he enjoyed perhaps the best moment of his two-and-a-half years at the club when he emerged from the substitutes' bench to score two injury-time goals in West London.

The Reds looked to be heading for a third successive top-flight draw — a result which would have given Arsenal the opportunity to cut their lead at the top of the table to just two points — but Nunez's goals ensured Liverpool won in the league for the first time since the turn of the year.

And former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker thinks Nunez's brace at Brentford could change the trajectory of his Liverpool career.

“Those two goals Darwin Nunez scored could be the most important goals he ever scores in his Liverpool career, I will go and say that," Reo-Coker said on CBS Sports Golazo. “When you get this type of result against a difficult team to beat in Brentford, it hits 90 minutes and you get two goals to win those three points in a Premier League title race.

“I think this is a game where it could define Liverpool’s season and where they’ll say this was the main game that transformed their entire season. Darwin Nunez will probably go down as a Liverpool legend if they go all the way to win the Premier League title.”

Suggesting Nunez will go down as a Liverpool legend is a bold shout — describing him as a potential cult hero might be more accurate — but either way, the Uruguayan's contribution at the Gtech Community Stadium will be remembered for years to come if he and his teammates get their hands on the Premier League trophy at the end of the campaign.
