Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has reiterated his belief that Darwin Nunez should sign for the Reds' title rivals Arsenal if he moves on from Anfield after three seasons in the summer.

Nunez has scored just four Premier League goals this season and missed an open goal at Villa Park which could have added two more points to Liverpool's total for the campaign. He wasn't chosen to start that game even though Curtis Jones was played out of position in the frontline instead.

But while things have not clicked for the Uruguayan on Merseyside, Hamann feels that Nunez could still get another opportunity in the Premier League. Whether Liverpool would be willing to sell to a rival, of course, is another matter.

"I think the team (Arsenal) is well equipped, but the lack of a center forward is obviously what I think harms their chances," Hamann told Prime Casino. "And I think even Nunez, I think Nunez would be gold for Arsenal.

"I think if you've got somebody up top who bullies defenders, who draws defenders in, he always gets the attention of two or three players. Obviously, he’s a big unit. He’s quick. The game changes. If you've got somebody up top with a physical presence, with pace, it's a different ballgame.

"They always find space, Arsenal, but it also makes it easier for the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard when they get into these pockets because quick players stretch teams. They simply haven't got it. I think even a Nunez would be a brilliant addition to the squad, but it’s too late for that now and they have to make do with what they have."

Nunez drew interest from Saudi Arabia during the January transfer window but Liverpool was never going to let him leave without signing a replacement. As he proved by scoring the winner against Brentford when he came off the bench, the 25-year-old could still make an important contribution before the season is done.

"Arsenal won't win anything"

"I can’t see Arsenal winning anything without a center forward," Hamann told BestOffShoreSportsbook last month. "You could maybe win a cup with a bit of luck and you can win the Champions League without being the best team, but in the Premier League you need to be the best and without a center forward there are few teams in history to have won that way.

"You can look at Pep Guardiola’s teams who had the best wingers in the world or teams with the likes of Neymar or Lionel Messi, but Arsenal need a presence. Arsenal would be a transformed team with Nunez up front. Someone with that physical presence who can stretch teams and create space.

"Imagine the damage that Saka or Martinelli could do if Nunez was stretching teams with his pace and occupying defenders. It would change the whole dynamic of the team.

"Kai Havertz might go in behind but in one or two steps he’s already caught by the defenders. Arsenal need a quick center forward to give them another option. I think their struggles going forward are down to a lack of physical presence."

Liverpool.com says: Nunez playing for Arsenal is pretty hard to imagine. Liverpool wouldn't let him leave on the cheap and it would be a major gamble for the Gunners to go big on someone who has spent three years in England without showing any consistency.
