Saudi Pro League interest in Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly genuine as the January transfer window reaches the halfway point. The Uruguayan forward has endured a difficult campaign for the Reds this season having struggled to consistently find the net.

Nunez has scored just four goals this season with only two of those coming in the Premier League. He has not found the back of the net since mid-December when he scored in the Carabao Cup victory over Southampton.

Such form has led to speculation regarding whether or not the forward has a future at Anfield under Arne Slot. According to the Daily Mail, Saudi Pro League interest in the 25-year-old is genuine however no formal bid has been submitted for the striker at this stage.

Ahead of Saturday's clash with Brentford in the capital, Slot spoke about Nunez's form under his leadership. "Darwin is a striker we have to use in a certain way and we were not able yet to bring the best out of him this season," the Liverpool head coach told reporters.

"Against Accrington Stanley again you saw that he has a lot of pace but, unfortunately for him, most teams sit back a lot against us. If you look back at the goals he scored for us, I remember the one against Aston Villa when he went around the goalkeeper on a fast break, that is his main strength - he has other qualities as well - but we are still working on getting him in the best possible positions against a low block.

"That involves the right timings, the right crosses, the right position to start from and making the right run. But I also see, and I don’t know if other people see this, the way teams defend our No.9 is something you have to give credit to the other teams for.

"Darwin will score his goals. He already did and he will again."
