David Moyes agreed Everton return SIX years ago as hierarchy at 'loggerheads' over manager picks
David Moyes agreed to return to Everton a full six years ago as he takes up his second stint in charge.
The Europa Conference League winner made a heroes return to the Toffees after they sacked Sean Dyche. Everton sit one point outside the relegation zone and their poor performances have drawn the ire of fans. A 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa has not helped their fortunes as fans in blue fear another year of relegations struggles.
But could things have been different if David Moyes made a comeback a few years back. It has been revealed that the former Manchester United boss had a full agreement in place to return to the club in December 2019 following the sacking of now Fulham boss Marco Silva. But majority owner Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright were at loggerheads over his reappointment.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Jamie Carragher revealed some inside knowledge of the club and former chairman Bill Kenwright. He commented: "That has been on the cards a long time that. Not on the cards as in they were always permanently after him. When they have been close to changing managers David Moyes has always been involved in the conversation.
"Without a doubt Bill Kenwright, when he was still in charge was desperate I think to bring Moyes back. Especially when Moshiri came in the were probably at loggerheads when choosing managers. And the one where he was the closest was, he basically got the job, and that night when they agreed it [Carlo] Ancelotti got sacked in Napoli. And Moshiri's people got involved - you can't turn Ancelotti down."
