David Moyes faces big striker call as Everton could make change they 'desperately' need
Defence and central midfield look settled areas in the side but with returning Everton manager David Moyes showing faith in Dominic Calvert-Lewin by recalling him to spearhead the attack in his first game back against Aston Villa, could the Blues boss be tempted to mix things up again up front against Tottenham Hotspur after the striker’s glaring miss in stoppage time?
Calvert-Lewin, who has now entered the final six months of his current deal at Everton and can sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs to leave on a Bosman-style free transfer this summer, had an inviting opportunity to score what would have been a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to earn his side a share of the spoil in the 93rd minute but when substitute Jesper Lindstrom put the chance on a plate for the Yorkshireman, picked him out with a low ball into the box, he scooped his effort over the bar.
The 27-year-old, who endured a 23-game drought last season, has now gone 16 consecutive matches this term without finding the net having last scored in the reverse fixture with Unai Emery’s side at Villa Park back on September 14.

His place won’t be taken by on-loan Armando Broja, who Moyes revealed could be sent back to parent club Chelsea after a scan revealed he had suffered ankle ligament damage after coming on as a substitute in Everton’s 2-0 FA Cup third round win over League One Peterborough United with the Albania international set to be sidelined for around 10-12 weeks, but Beto, who came on to partner Calvert-Lewin in a two-man attack for the final seven minutes against Villa, is a possibility.
The £25.8million recruit from Udinese in August 2023, has been linked with a move back to Italy this month, but having struck against the Posh last week, the 26-year-old has now scored one more goal than the Blues’ number nine so far this season, in just 448 minutes compared to Calvert-Lewin’s 1479.
Moyes, also spoke of the team: “desperately needing to add some quality in certain areas, mainly to create and craft goals,” so he will be hoping that Dwight McNeil, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since the 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 4, is fit to return.
If the former Burnley man comes back into the side then perhaps Jack Harrison could drop out on the wing, or McNeil or Iliman Ndiaye might replace Abdoulaye Doucoure in the number 10 role?
