David Moyes praised Aston Villa's squad building after his Everton side lost 1-0 at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

It was Moyes' first game as the Toffees manager in his second spell in charge as he looks to guide the club away from relegation trouble this season. But the size of his task is evident after being second best against Villa, who deserved to score more than just the one.

Ollie Watkins broke the deadlock in the 51st minute after being set away by Morgan Rogers. Watkins, Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey all missed presentable chances to open the scoring before the break.

After full-time, Moyes hailed Villa's ambition and the team Unai Emery has assembled in the last few years.

"We’ve come in and we have Aston Villa on the Wednesday night and then Tottenham at the weekend, we’re really hardly able to breathe," Moyes said in his post-match press conference. "We’re trying to find out how the players work and even coming back here, it’s a different Everton that I left.

"What happens is, we’re right in it and we have to get points. I think if we had scored, it would’ve been one each, but they had the better of it.

"They are a really good side and have been spending probably over £100m a year for the last five or six years. They have spent it brilliantly well and have a great manager. I think you see those levels that we were up against tonight. They are a well-drilled team."

Villa will head to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (5:30pm) to take on Arsenal, before they then face AS Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday (5:45pm).
