David Moyes conceded the final stretch of the January transfer window could be even more significant as Everton deal with injuries to two key players.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Orel Mangala were both forced down the tunnel during the win over Brighton and Hove Albion. While they are still to be formally assessed by club medical staff, there are initial fears over both.

Speaking after the match, Moyes said: "They don't look great, either of them, but the medical team have told me to let you know they'll get assessed first and then we'll make a decision. But I think they seem to think they're not the best, either of them, at the moment.”

Calvert-Lewin pulled up with a hamstring problem after just 12 minutes. He appeared in immediate concern after leaping to challenge for a long ball and limped towards the dressing room after receiving treatment on the pitch.

Should he face any time out he would leave Moyes with just one senior centre forward in Beto, with Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti both facing extended periods on the sidelines.

Mangala, on loan from Lyon, suffered a knee injury in the second half after a collision with Joel Veltman. He initially received treatment and attempted to return, but soon crumpled and had to leave the pitch. The timing of his injury added further pressure on Everton, who finished with 10 men due to substitution timing regulations preventing them from replacing him.

Moyes added: “I've got to say, Mangala's got a bad injury as well. So, we've had a difficult day and if we had actually come away and not got a result today, it would have felt much sorer because of the couple of injuries we've picked up. So, that was great credit to the players, their effort and commitment to get a result under the circumstances.”

Everton are yet to sign a player in January despite Moyes believing that incomings were necessary even before today. The club is looking to cancel Broja’s deal with Chelsea, exploring whether they could bring in either Carney Chukwuemeka or Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on loan as a compromise. The demand for Dewsbury-Hall rose with Mangala’s knock, though there is a fear that Everton may have to wait until the final days of the window to have a chance of securing the central midfielder due to the intensity of the competition for him.

Moyes had been looking to strengthen in attack, either with a forward or winger, and in central midfield already. He accepted the events at The Amex heightened the need to address those areas.

Asked whether that was the case, he said: “I think it does. I feel as if, depending on what comes back from their assessment, I'll decide a little bit more as to whether we're having to go and do something which we may have to do from what we've seen.”
