David Moyes attempted to take some positives from Everton’s FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth but conceded his side lost to “two terrible goals”.

The Blues boss said he played a strong team despite his priority being Premier League survival because he hoped to lead the club on a cup run.

First half goals from Antoine Semenyo and Daniel Jebbison spoiled those plans, however. And despite rallying in the second half, the damage had been done before the hosts hit the woodwork three times and had an effort cleared off the line.

On the work to try and find a route back into the match, Moyes said: “At least we showed a little bit of gumption in the second half and tried to get ourselves back in the game. We conceded two terrible goals, really poor goals, but we kept at it, tried to not give them too many opportunities. Jordan [Pickford] made one good save in the second half, but it just wasn’t going to go in.

“I thought all the players we introduced to the game made a big difference as well. They helped us, gave us more energy, so I am hoping those players between now and the end of the season are going to be a big positive and help us.”

Moyes made just one change from the win against Leicester City last week, with Vitalii Mykolenko absent after feeling a calf issue on Saturday morning.

Explaining his approach to the fourth round tie, Moyes said: "It certainly would have been nice [to have had a cup run]. We put a strong team out today, probably everybody except Myko, to try and get ourselves through in the competition.

“We saw it as a great chance. But again, it wouldn't be our number one priority. We said that the other day. But I know that if I'm an Everton supporter who's watched the club over many years, I would have loved another tie here at Goodison, if possible, or even another Wembley trip if that could have been possible as well.”
