West Ham Fan View: Why David Moyes MIGHT be the right man for us

After months of West Ham struggling and Slaven Bilic being under pressure, the club finally decided to let Bilic go. David Moyes was chosen as his replacement and despite there being a lot of negativity surrounding his appointment, he may be the right man for the job, right now.

Now the anger at our current situation is understandable. We were told that there was a plan to get us into the Champions League though we have only been declining since the stadium move and now we have sacked our manager after 11 games.

Moyes’ history

There is no doubt that Moyes has failed in his last three jobs at Manchester United, Real Sociedad, and Sunderland. The last one in particular has worried fans given that Moyes did get relegated with Sunderland and we currently sit in the relegation zone.

But is it fair to write Moyes off completely after these roles? A lot of managers would have struggled, though maybe not to Moyes’ extent, to take over Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson had left. Going to manage Real Sociedad was a brave move by Moyes though managing in a different country was always going to have its difficulties. His time at Sunderland was disastrous but their squad was very poor and they were in decline for a while.

We do not have the same problem in regards to the squad. Moyes will be working with a far better squad than at Sunderland and our squad is capable of finishing near the top half of the Premier League.

Defensive issues

Our defence has been our main problem since Bilic took over. We have conceded 23 goals already this season which is more than any other team in the Premier League. It is too easy for teams to attack us and Moyes showed at Everton that he knows how to organise a defence.

In his last season at Everton, they conceded fewer goals than Manchester United who finished 1st. We do have good defenders at the club which Moyes can work with and make us into a solid defensive unit.

The alternative?

I do not believe that Moyes should be the manager of West Ham United for years to come but he may have been the correct appointment right now on a short-term basis. Managers are unlikely to leave their roles in the middle of the season and the likes of Sam Allardyce (who would have been my choice), Ronald Koeman and Alan Pardew were mentioned to replace Bilic. But Allardyce is unrealistic given his history with West Ham with Koeman and Pardew also recently failing.

It’s clear that we need the Moyes of Everton to return and should he fail at West Ham, I cannot see him being given the chance to manage in the Premier League again. Will Moyes’ desire to redeem himself see West Ham improve?
