It has been a quiet January transfer window for Newcastle United so far, but things could possibly change as we near the final week of the winter window.

The only transfer activity at St James’ Park so far has seen Isaac Hayden sent out on loan at Portsmouth. The club have also sent some of the squad’s youngsters out on loan.

As has been the case in previous windows, the club have been aware of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) that may have hampered their transfer activity. But what would happen in an ideal world in the final days of the transfer window?

ChronicleLive have taken a look at what would be a dream end to the window for Eddie Howe and his Newcastle squad..

Jonathan David deal

Newcastle are among the clubs eyeing a move for Lille striker Jonathan David, who is out of contract at the end of the season. A dream scenario for Eddie Howe would see them either agreeing a pre-contract with the forward ahead of a summer move, or beating the competition to sign the player on a permanent deal for what could be a cut-price fee before the end of his contract.

The latter is unlikely given Lille's Champions League progress but the Chronicle reported earlier this week that United have made a first move to sign David. The Magpies were represented by a high-level club employee for Lille's defeat of Nice last weekend.

The Canada international has impressed in Ligue 1 this season, and would provide backup and competition to Alexander Isak amid fitness concerns over Callum Wilson. He scored against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Alexander Isak stays

It would take a mammoth offer for Newcastle to even consider selling Alexander Isak this month, but the closing of the transfer window will put an end to any uncertainty over his future. The striker has been key and will continue to be for Howe’s side so far this season and for the rest of the campaign, and knowing he will be staying at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future would be a massive boost.

"There's no part of me or anyone at Newcastle that wants to let Alex go," Howe said in December. "He's very much part of our long-term plans. He's first class.

New defender and winger arrive

Both Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly have been linked with moves away from Newcastle in the January window. Sales of both would be a boost in terms of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) going into the summer transfer window.

However, in an ideal world, the exit of both players would also lead to replacements coming in. Should both leave, then it could leave Newcastle slightly light on options out wide and in defence.

If the club are able to bring in cover in both of the areas before the deadline, then it would cover for any injuries that may occur between now and the end of the season. It would take some risk out of the sales of both players.
