On this day in 2023, former Watford Observer sports editor and assistant editor Oliver Phillips passed away peacefully at his home in France, aged 81.

Widely regarded as an authority on Watford FC, Oli covered the club for more than 40 years, reporting on more than 2,000 matches and writing several books on both the team and the town’s history.

His close working relationships with club figures, including Graham Taylor and Elton John, were legendary.

He played a key role in encouraging the music icon’s involvement with the Hornets.

Even after retiring to France, Oli remained dedicated to Watford, often returning for a "decent pint" and a "proper curry".

His impact was officially recognised when Watford Borough Council included him in their list of 100 people who shaped the town.

Watford FC also honoured him by naming their media suite after him, ensuring his legacy lives on in the club he loved.
