On This Day: Watford FC mural unveiled in town centre subway
On this day in February 2022, a new Watford FC mural was officially unveiled in the town centre subway under Exchange Road.
The artwork, created by MurWalls as part of a £55,000 project, celebrates the club’s ‘100 Years at the Vic’ milestone and the borough’s centenary.
Fans heading to Vicarage Road can now walk past a visual tribute to the Hornets’ history, featuring legends such as Cliff Holton, Luther Blissett, Tommy Mooney, and Troy Deeney.
Nigel Gibbs, whose portrait is styled like a Panini sticker, reflected on the club’s deep-rooted community spirit.
He said: “The mural showcases the club and town’s sense of community by improving the subway, as well as highlighting those players who had an ever-lasting effect on both."
The subway improvements include anti-graffiti coatings and updated historical displays.
At the time, Mayor Peter Taylor praised the project for brightening up the area, ensuring it remains a lasting tribute for generations of Watford fans.
