Leeds United’s Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion have today announced the loan signing of Adam Armstrong from Southampton.

West Brom and Southampton agreed the deal in the dying embers of the winter window yesterday but did not get confirmation as to whether the deal was formally completed until this afternoon.

Leeds had been linked with Armstrong earlier on Monday, with it apparent that the Saints striker was available for transfer. However, as reported by Leeds Live, the club ultimately decided against pursuing a deal.

Armstrong has an impressive record in the Championship, with 52 goals netted in his last 89 games in the second tier, including the play-offs. His goal in last year’s play-off final proved enough to see Southampton edge past Leeds and deny them a return to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has played in 20 Premier League games for rock-bottom Southampton this season, but has only scored twice. West Brom, now managed by Tony Mowbray, are meanwhile sixth in the Championship, with the Baggies only in the play-off positions on goal difference.

Armstrong becomes the Baggies' fourth recruit of the window. Sporting Director Andrew Nestor said: “We are pleased to welcome Adam to The Hawthorns for the rest of the season. He has extensive experience in the Championship and a proven goalscoring record.

“We had always planned to reinforce our striker options and injuries have accelerated our need in this area. Adam is an ideal fit for our squad and very much suits our established style.”

As for Leeds, they decided against signing a new player in the market. Daniel Farke had always insisted that he would only bring in a talent should they improve the team, and would not sign players for the sake of merely adding numbers. The absence of arrivals meant Leeds have not recruited in the winter window for three of the past five seasons.

Five players did exit Elland Road, though. Sonny Perkins and youth player Jeremiah Mullen permanently joined Leyton Orient and Dunferlime, respectively, while Joe Gelhardt (Hull City), Charlie Crew (Doncaster Rovers) and Luca Thomas (Halifax Town) all secured short-term loan spells away.
