Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a major blow ahead of their trip to Leeds United. Owner Dejphon Chansiri confirmed at an explosive fans forum last night that influential midfielder Shea Charles is to be recalled by Southampton.

Northern Ireland international Charles has been one of the Owls' standout performers this season. Charles has played 24 matches across all competitions for Wednesday this term, scoring once and contributing four assists.

Chairman Chansiri dropped the bombshell news of Southampton triggering Charles' recall clause at the back end of a fans forum that lasted over five hours, wandering back into the room having received a phone call. It is understood the talented 21-year-old will return to his parent club after the Owls' next two fixtures against the Whites and Bristol City. Wednesday visit Elland Road on Sunday before entertaining the Robins next week.

“Of course we like him, but what can we do? It is out of our control," Chansiri said. "In my opinion, he is not ready for the Premier League. Southampton in this situation he cannot help, Southampton need a better player than this.

"Let’s see. If they do that, maybe we do something. Let’s see. Someone damage us then we can damage them as well, let’s see.”

Reports in the south coast have claimed Wednesday could revive a deal for Charles but an additional loan fee would need to be agreed. Owls boss Danny Röhl has previously stated Charles would like to remain at Hillsborough for the remainder of the campaign.

Chansiri confirmed Southampton approached Wednesday about Röhl's availability last month following Russell Martin's departure. Ivan Juric eventually succeeded Martin at the helm.
