Denis Law could've played for anyone but I had to tell barman who he was after Wembley heroics
John Greig insists Denis Law would have graced any side in the world when he was at the peak of his powers.
Rangers legend Greig was a Scotland team-mate of the Lawman and they were part of the legendary side that beat the Auld Enemy in 1967. Law was a superstar at the time but Greig remembers a pub landlord not recognising the great man after our thrilling 3-2 Wembley triumph. Greig said: “Quite honestly, it was a privilege and an honour to play in the same team as Denis. He could have played in any team in the world.
“When you had him in your team, you thought you could beat anybody because he was always capable of scoring goals. I remember the day after the game at Wembley in 1967. Denis said, ‘We’ll go to this pub’ so we walked in and ordered shandies. The barman says, ‘Are you just down for the game, lad?’ And I looked at him and said, ‘Pardon? He said, ‘Are you just down for the game?’ I said, ‘No, this is Denis Law.’ I caught myself laughing about it.”
