Denmark vs England: Roof closed at Frankfurt Arena for Euro 2024 clash after severe weather warning
UEFA have decided to close the roof of the Frankfurt Arena for England’s Euro 2024 clash with Denmark.
Rain is no longer forecast in Frankfurt but the decision to close the roof was taken early on Thursday morning.
A severe weather warning was issued across western and central regions of Germany on Wednesday.
Fan zones in Dortmund, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen were all closed due to the adverse conditions.
German newspaper Bild on Wednesday quoted meteorologist Dominik Jung saying the closure of the roof was necessary and that there was a potential “risk to life”.
Jung said: “We don't currently know every place that could get hit, but we do know the region where something could happen. But better safe than sorry.”
Bad weather has hit Euro 2024 this week, with Turkey’s win over Georgia in Dortmund hit by torrential rain on Tuesday.
England are seeking a win against Denmark on Thursday evening that would secure qualification to the knockout stages.
Victory could even see them top Group C depending on the result in the earlier game in the group between Serbia and Slovenia in Munich. England then finish their group campaign against Slovenia in Cologne next week.
