Derby County are fully supporting midfielder Tyrese Fornah after he was subjected to racist abuse on Instagram.

A comment was left on his account in the wake of Salford City's 1-1 draw with Newport County in midweek with the midfielder currently on a season-long loan at the League Two club.

Salford have reported the incident to Meta, which runs Instagram and Facebook, in the hope they will take "necessary action" having released a strongly-worded statement. Derby too will offer their support to the former Nottingham Forest midfielder who has been a key part of Salford's bid to win promotion.

Derby said: "Derby County stands with Tyrese Fornah and joins Salford City in condemning this unacceptable behaviour. We will not tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind and Tyrese has the full support of everyone at the club."

Fornah has played 27 games this season for Salford and scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win over Barrow last before on Boxing Day. Manager Karl Robinson is a big fan of the midfielder who is out of contract in the summer at Pride Park.

Salford have called on Meta to take action and said in a statement: "Salford City is aware of a racial comment made towards midfielder Tyrese Fornah on Instagram following Tuesday night’s match.

"We have a zero-tolerance stance on the use of racist or discriminative language or behaviour and have reported the culprit to the relevant authorities. We trust that Meta will take the necessary action against the individual and continue to work with clubs and the EFL to prevent issues of this nature from happening.

"Tyrese has our full support and reassurance that we will not tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind."
