Derby County squad depth sparks free transfer question amid deadline-day anger

Derby County made just the one signing on transfer deadline day with Harrison Armstrong arriving on loan until the end of the season from Everton.

Derby had been looking to add another forward to the squad, but could not get a deal over the line with West Brom's Karlan Grant being among a number of players the club enquired about. That sparked plenty of anger among fans who were hoping to see another attacker come through the door.

The club made four signings in total this January with the biggest outlay being the £4m spent on Sondre Langas from Viking FK. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen cost around £800,000 while there was a nominal sum forked out for Matt Clarke from Middlesbrough.

If we are to judge the business that Derby did, Salvesen was a significant upgrade on James Collins, who departed for Lincoln City, while Clarke is also a Championship ready player who replaced Sonny Bradley, now at Wycombe on loan.

Langas replaced the outgoing Eiran Cashin, who made a move to Premier League Brighton for a fee of around £9m last Friday. Armstrong's arrival meant he replaced Tawanda Chirewa and kept Derby's number of loan signings at five.

After failing to add to their attack yesterday, Derby do have the option of recruiting a free agent to their ranks, something they did last season when they signed Dwight Gayle following his exit from Stoke. Given they were still pushing for another signing until last night's 11pm deadline suggests that this could come into consideration if there are any players worth pursuing.

But Derby's biggest issue looking at the squad as it stands is injuries. Dajaune Brown looks to be out for the season because of a hamstring operation while Conor Washington is working his way back to fitness.

Kane Wilson and Corey Blackett-Taylor are out with hamstring problems, although Callum Elder is not expected to be absent too long because he has only tweaked his groin. Ryan Nyambe is being assessed after being replaced at half-time of the Sheffield United defeat and David Ozoh had to come off with a tight calf.

The injury problems are a barrier to overcome, although Nat Phillips is due to return to training this week and Langas, although a centre-back, can play right-back should Nyambe not be ready for Norwich.

The challenge facing Rams boss Paul Warne is getting the most out of the wide players and finding a midfield blend that can also create chances through the middle of the pitch. They do have a significant number of central midfielders, it's finding a balance that is defensively solid as well as being creative. Derby will hope that Armstrong's arrival from Everton can help that.
