Garry Monk felt his Cambridge side were “extremely unfortunate” not to take all three points against Wanderers.

Monk admitted that Zeno Ibsen Rossi’s late own goal was tough to take but insisted he was proud of the display against a “high quality squad”.

“Two feelings – one of disappointment at how we haven’t walked out of here with three points, given everything we have faced and where we are at as a squad,” he said after the final whistle.

“Disappointment for ourselves and the fans. But on the flip side, I don’t think we could have given any more.

“First half, I thought we were excellent, looked a real threat and really good with the ball at times.

“Second half, you expect them to come out and they will have pressure but I thought we managed it.

“Apart from the one where Marko (Marosi) made a really good double save, I don’t think they had too many shots on our goal.

“We were defending manfully and I feel disappointed for them, they couldn’t have given any more. But I am also proud of the performance.”

The U’s have now gone seven games without victory in the league and remain in the relegation zone – eight points adrift, albeit with a game in hand.

Monk says they have to replicate the “desire” that was on show at the Toughsheet Community Stadium if they are to turn their season around.

When asked about the late equaliser, he replied: “You are trying to throw your body on the line and (Rossi) does that.

“Nine times out of 10 that goes wide of the goal and you defend a corner, but it goes in the goal.

“It is extremely unfortunate. We deserved the three points today. I thought, for the effort and everything that went into that game, how we managed it, we deserved the three points.

“We will come back in and reflect on it. There are loads of really good things you can show them.

“I have already said it in the changing room, that is the level of desire you need to get out of this situation. I don’t think anyone can question the attitude towards today’s game.”
