Deserved win, praise for Ethon Archer midfield display and hunting down play-off places - Cheltenham Town manager Michael Flynn after Barrow win
You say you want your substitutes to make an impact and they certainly did that today, didn't they?
They did. I thought the subs, I am not going to say changed the game, but I think going 2-0 down made me go with two up front, even though I thought the first half was probably the best we've played in the league for about 10 games. We go in 1-0 down, poor goal. Start second half, another poor goal, which I've said is the bane of my life at the minute because we are giving poor goals away. But we were actually playing all right. We were playing well, looking more dangerous, definitely than we did at Fleetwood, which wasn't hard by the way. You go 2-0 down and think it's going to be one of those days, but fair play, the boys dug in and I thought they were superb against a well organised and dangerous Barrow team.
You took your skipper and your top scorer off, so that could be described as a brave decision

Brave, yes. I do what I feel is best to win a football match. Hindsight is a beautiful thing. People may ask why I didn't start like that, but you don't know how the game is going to turn out. We played some really good football in the first half. We've dominated possession today, which we don't normally do. We had 67 per cent, or 66 I think we finished on second half. We looked like a really good team today, well-drilled, can play football, can mix it up, and we look dangerous. We looked dangerous to ourselves too, by the way!
You had to change the system without Liam Kinsella and Tim Dieng, how early did you know you'd have to change things around?
We have worked on it in the week, played it before this season and I like to match teams up and go man for man. It was working. We conceded a poor set play goal and Barrow are very, very good at set plays in both boxes. I was disappointed with that. It wasn't a foul anyway, but that's a different story. I will give the referee some breathing space today because we won the game, but it was not right and there were some crazy decisions today. We have done our homework, we knew what to expect. We didn't think they'd change much at all and they didn't, so we thought we could get the better of them and going around the houses, we have. But they are a dangerous team, Andy (Whing) has come in and if he can get them on a run like they started, they are a dangerous team for anybody, especially at home.
Who knew Ethon Archer could play as a central midfield player?
Gary Johnson does. I thought with a two, it'd suit him better today and I have just told him I thought he was the best player on the pitch. He was outstanding. His game intelligence, workrate, passing, close control with the ball, he was absolutely superb and I am glad I've seen that because I've been a midfielder and I do think he is better as a wide man when he has that space and can get into 1 v 1 situations, but today he has shown he can play in that position.
How did you feel Ethan Williams did on his full debut?
Really good. He didn't have much space first half, but he was dangerous, lively. He is unbelievably both footed, taking corners with both feet. He is really dangerous. Things to work on, as we all have, but younger players especially where they can improve, but I thought Ethan was very good and Ethon was brilliant.
And Ashley Hay coming up with the winner
Yes, I am over the moon for him. It's his first professional goal. He was excellent when he came on and that's what we've seen in him before we brought him here. He maybe lost a bit of confidence, or was trying too hard, whichever way you want to look at it. Matty Taylor today was excellent, he had the bit between his teeth, he hasn't sulked when he's not played. Yes, he's disappointed, but I told him, that's the way you answer with me and win with me, by doing it on the pitch. There is no point moping around, or feeling sorry for yourself and I can tell you now, he hasn't. None of them have. When we scored the second and third Benno and George Miller were jumping up and down on the bench, hugging everybody and that's togetherness and a sign of a team that will fight for each other and do whatever it takes to get their teammates out of trouble and protect them from getting into trouble.
And Matty Taylor will be banging on your door for a start now
I have told him to leave me alone next week!
Character, resilience, showing that in spades today
It does and it's an important win. We have been on a really good run. We have a tough game now against Newport, who are unbeaten in six. They have drawn today, my hometown club, so I am looking forward to going there. It's good going there after a win, but it'll be a difficult game. We'll prepare, ready for next week. One game at a time.
The crowd really got behind you second half didn't they?
They did. There were a couple behind me really frustrated. Stick with us. I know we have got out of jail, or whatever you want to say today. I wouldn't say that because we deserved that win. But trust us and stick with us because I had a little smile when we went 2-0 down, not out of arrogance or anything like that, but come on, you have watched this with us and we've been the better team. It's been two poor goals we've given away. There is not much I can do about that. If we make an individual error, so just stick with us and we'll do what we can to rectify it and that's what we did. Thankfully, they did stick with us and cheered us off afterwards.
How are Tim Dieng and Liam Kinsella?
Nothing serious. Both back and will train next week. It was just the game today, was no point in risking them and having them out for six, seven, eight, nine, 10 games. It was an educated decision.
And you have a bit of a decision in midfield now with Ethon Archer's performance today
I have a decision on what formation, what team, everything, but that's what I get paid for, myself and the staff will sit down, go through it and we'll go through a gameplan ready for Newport on Saturday.
You always said that Matty Taylor would score goals in League Two, but has the formation perhaps suited George Miller more for most of this season?
Exactly, that's what it is. George Miller has been more effective for us in that position than any of the other strikers. It's because he brings the other two in, Jordan Thomas and Ethon, into play more than the others. That's not a slant on the other strikers, it's just something that has worked for us. Something we'll look at now. We have worked on loads of formations and played loads of formations, so it's not like we are going into something new every time we change the formation. It's something the boys are prepped on and prepared for. I am comfortable, whatever we start with. I couldn't care if I have to change it five times, as long as they get the information, they know exactly what they are doing.
You want to tick off 50 points, but do you feel the play-offs are up for grabs?
The whole league is. I don't think it's the most difficult League Two I've ever seen, but there are a lot of good teams in it. It's closer than normal because everyone keeps beating everyone, apart from Walsall, who have really kicked on and been a solid, consistent machine. They deserve credit for that. It's even happened to them, with one win in six. They have won today, which is good for them. But they have been the most consistent team, which is why they they look like they are going to go up.
If your away form shows an improvement you should be in the mix shouldn't you, with such a strong recent home record?
100 per cent, we will be and if we cut out silly mistakes costing us goals, then we would have been in the top three, nevermind the play-offs.
