Who is Desire Doue? PSG starlet Liverpool could sign after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia transfer fallout

Liverpool kept its powder dry in the January transfer window. Even so, the various deals elsewhere could yet pave the way for the future arrival of Desire Doue at Anfield.

That's because it was a far more eventful window at PSG. The French giant opportunistically swooped for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — a move which Liverpool was briefly tipped to make, before a switch to the Parc des Princes was rapidly sewn up.

In the end, Richard Hughes reportedly did not even make a play for Kvaratskhelia, with Liverpool able to cite the presence of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz as reasons why the move would have made little sense anyway. But it seems PSG did not make any such considerations, with the Georgian's arrival deepening concerns for Doue.

According to Anfield Watch, Doue was already "unsettled" by his lack of playing time at PSG. That situation could be "compounded" by such a high-profile addition in his favored position on the left wing.

And Liverpool could apparently be well-placed to capitalize. The report claims that the Reds have a long-standing interest in Doue, dating back to his time at Rennes, and that the 19-year-old could now be a step closer to ending up at Anfield.

Only signed last summer, Doue has had to settle for a peripheral role. Ten of his 17 league appearances have come from the bench, and it has been a similar story in the Champions League — although he earned starts in the vital final two games against Man City and Stuttgart, registering an assist in both contests.

That showed the sort of promise which prompted PSG to spend $52m (£42m/€50m) on Doue in the first place. Should he end up making a premature exit, Liverpool would likely need to at least match this transfer fee.

Positive and direct, Doue's most statistically-similar player over the last year is the prodigous Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, at least according to FBRef. Relentlessly progressive through both passing and dribbling, he is also active against the ball, and a major provider of chances to his teammates.

In Diaz and Gakpo, and Sadio Mane before them, Liverpool has grown used to goal-scoring left wingers (even if goals for the Colombian have not been free-flowing of late). Kvaratskhelia, for what it's worth, is of a somewhat similar mold.

But Doue is far more creative in nature, more minded to lay on a chance for others than craft one for himself. That's partly why he is also adept in an advanced midfield position, which would present another option at Liverpool.

Having said that, he netted three goals for himself at the Olympic Games last summer. Doue was a key figure for the host nation as it advanced to the final, though he is yet to make his senior debut outside of the competition.

PSG would surely be reluctant to lose Doue, who has shown his talent when afforded the opportunities. But the arrival of Kvaratskhelia has somewhat complicated the picture, and Liverpool would be wise to be ready to act.
