Editor's note: Follow Ohio State vs. Notre Dame live updates, scores and highlights from the national championship game.

ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit isn't new to covering Ohio State football in big games. Monday's game will be a little different, however.

Herbstreit, who has worked for ESPN since 1995, has plenty of connections to the program, including his son. Zak Herbstreit is a current walk-on tight end with the team. Two of his other sons, Tye and Jake Herbstreit, walked on at Clemson before Jake transferred to Ohio State. The youngest son, Chase Herbstreit, actually signed with archrival Michigan in the 2025 recruiting cycle.

Did Herbstreit play at Ohio State? Here's everything to know about his playing career:

Did Kirk Herbstreit play at Ohio State?

Yes, Herbstreit played quarterback for the Buckeyes from 1989-93. He was mainly a backup in the first three seasons of his career, before serving as the starter as a senior.

Herbstreit backed up starters Greg Frey and Kent Graham his first three seasons, before being named the starter and co-captain ahead of the 1992-93 season. He completed 155 of 264 passes (58.7%) for 1,904 yards with four touchdowns to six interceptions that season, as Ohio State lost to Florida in the Citrus Bowl.

Herbstreit had a career-best performance in his lone start against Michigan in "The Game," completing 28 passes for 271 yards, which was a program record until eventual Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith completed 29 passes against Michigan, ironically enough, in 2006.

Herbstreit's dad, Jim Herbstreit, was also a co-captain at Ohio State in 1960, completing the father-son captain duo.
