Dion Charles sale gives 'scope for more' insists Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt
WANDERERS hope to bring a new signing on board this week after Dion Charles completes his move to Huddersfield Town.
Ian Evatt stood by the club’s decision to sell the Northern Ireland international to a League One rival, with a reported fee of £750,000 plus bonuses on the table.
And he pledged to reinvest that cash across his whole squad by the end of the window – with links emerging yesterday about a loan offer for Charlton Athletic midfielder Terry Taylor.
Wanderers would have one place spare in their squad quota for an outfield player aged 21 or above and Taylor was left out of Charlton’s FA Cup squad at Preston last night.
They have also been linked with Norwegian attacking midfielder Jonas Therkelsen, who is playing for Strømsgodset.
Asked if he had been able to ‘plan ahead’ for the 29-year-old’s exit, Evatt told The Bolton News: “We had a pretty good idea. As I said, there's a lot of key stakeholders in that decision-making process and Dion is one and we mustn't forget that.
“So, again, we've discussed it and we feel like we've received a good offer. Dion is 29 and it enables us and will enable us to try and strengthen the squad in all different areas, which is really important.
“We are keeping a lot of irons in the fire at the moment. Obviously some players don't become available until really late in the window and, provided we get the right ones, we're willing to wait and observe, stay in contact and that's where we are at the moment.
“This thing's bubbling away all the time. I would hope that we'd have another new recruit in this week at some point and then, I think, towards the end of the window, potentially more.”
The Charles deal accelerated since he came on as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat at Rotherham United at the weekend with Huddersfield lodging their offer on Monday.
Asked whether it mattered that the striker was being allowed to join a club six places and 10 points ahead of Bolton in the League One table – and who will host Evatt’s side the weekend after next – he said the club had to take a practical stance.
“You can't turn down good money just because it's from a club in our division,” he said.
“We have to make sure what we do, we feel, is right for this football club, long-term, short-term, financially, for the team and that's what we've done.
“This gives us scope to do more. And, look, Dion has been brilliant for us and we thank him for everything that he's done.”
