I disagree with Arne Slot - Liverpool head coach made a mistake with Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a poor game against Manchester United, there is no escaping that. But I still don't buy into this tiring suggestion that Trent can't defend. Of course he can defend, he wouldn't be at Liverpool, wanted by Real Madrid, if he couldn't. But his head is not in the right place.

His head is wandering, it is what it is. I've seen it before. I've been watching football for 60 years. I've been involved in football for most of that, and that's what it is. He didn't react because his brain wasn't on the pitch.

Their opening goal was not the only time he didn't react defensively, because he wasn't at it. Their gameplan was to try and keep us down score-wise and hit us on an overload on Trent's side.

They just overloaded it whenever they had the ball with Bruno Fernandes, who just went over to that area and they tried to find him all the time. And then Dalot with running down the line, overlapping, and sometimes Salah wasn't tracking him, so Trent was overloaded.

They confronted him from the first minute, down that side. They didn't even go down Robbo's side at all.

And they got in quite a lot of times, and a lot of it wasn't Trent's fault. Let's get that right. When you're overloaded and not playing well, it makes it look even worse.

I haven't seen Liverpool fans start to turn on Trent, that's just some people talking. They might have been frustrated with him, but he wasn't the only player to play badly.

There were some poor performances there on Sunday, but Trent is going to be highlighted. Of course he is.

All I will say about Trent is I've played games - I played in 800-850 odd games - and there are some games in there where my mind wasn't right, my mind wasn't on it. For things that are family-orientated or whatever.

I felt sorry for Trent because of all the hype that surrounded the last week, since the start of January with Madrid and contract talks and maybe Liverpool have thrown a spanner in the works by offering a contract and he's left just thinking, 'What do I do?'

I'm only surmising, I have to say. But his head wasn't there. I personally thought he should have come off for his own good at half-time because I couldn't see him turning it around.

When your head's not right, your head's not right. And look, he will hold his hands up, Trent. Is it the worst game he's played for Liverpool? Possibly. And it's come arguably at the worst time because of all the talks surrounding him.

I really felt sorry for him. They score from his mistakes. Sometimes when I've been like that, I've been thinking, I've not asked the manager to take me off but I'm thinking, 'take me off for my own good because I'm playing rubbish here.'

I'm not right, for whatever reason, I'm not right. And the manager has kept me on me, just thinking I'm going to get a goal - but I didn't. I got flipping worse! Because I was mentally not at the races.

Arne Slot tried to stick by Trent, backing him up, keeping confidence in him. And it was never going to happen because when you're like that, you can't snap out of it for half time.

I was doing the commentary for LFC TV and said, 'for Trent's own good, he needed to perhaps come off'. Slot left him on for too long in my opinion.

And I'm pretty sure Trent would agree with that, because it's not his fault, you're just mentally not there because of what is surrounding him.

People might say it's not the contract talks, I know Arne backed him in his press conference and said he didn't think it was. But it is, I disagree with him, I think it is. Of course it is. 100%. I don't care what anyone says.

But the fact that they had their two best players at him all the time in Bruno and Dalot made it even harder. Gravenberch tried to get across at times but it was too open for him.

The lad needs a break now. Leave him out against Tottenham, even against Accrington so he can get his head right and move on when we play Forest away. Let him get his head right and then recall him to the starting XI for that.

Welcome back, Conor Bradley

I think we missed Szoboszlai a little bit, his energy and what he does, I think we might have missed him a little bit. Even the impact he would have had coming on as a sub.

But at least we still had Mac Allister, who is in really good form at the moment. Sets up one goal and helps win the penalty. Long may it continue.

It was good to see Conor Bradley come on. He looked like he had not even been out for some time. And Konate did alright. So that's a big plus sign for Liverpool as we're going to need them.

Don’t sell Doak

There is not a chance Liverpool should even be considering selling Ben Doak. No, not a chance. Not a chance.

That lad is only a baby, and from what I've seen of him, he's so exciting. He's got a lot to learn but he might have a lot to give.

I wouldn't sell him for any price at the moment, no chance. They’ve rejected two bids and the teams that are coming in for him are trying to steal him.

You don't blame them for coming in for him and trying it, but Liverpool don't need the money, we don't need money, we've got more money than sense.

I wouldn't let anyone go at this present moment in time, especially a young talented lad who could be our future. We should be adding to the squad if anything, not selling players.
