John Aldridge has urged Liverpool to sign a replacement for Mohamed Salah this month rather than a new left-back.

With just under two weeks to go until the January transfer window closes, it is looking increasingly likely that the Reds won’t do any business, despite having been urged by the likes of Jamie Carragher to sign a new defender in order to aid their push for the Premier League title.

Aldridge, though, feels Liverpool should go down a different route. With Salah’s future still up in the air, and with speculation growing recently over a move to Saudi Arabia, the former striker believes a replacement for the Egyptian needs to be the priority.

“I am like all Liverpool fans. I want to see the club make moves in the transfer window,” Aldridge wrote in his column for the ECHO. “We brought in £60m earlier in the season by selling players, it would be nice to see some re-invested.

“I think now is the time to spend and strengthen things up from a position of strength. People talk about left-backs but I would like another forward. Someone to come in and freshen things up. We all want to see that. Whether the owners do it or not, we have to wait and see. But I think we should.”

Aldridge added: “We know Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is wanted by Real Madrid, while there’s new speculation about Mo and Virgil [van Dijk] and Saudi Arabia at the moment.

“When Ian Rush was going to Juventus, Kenny Dalglish pinpointed me to come in and replace him. If Mo Salah is going to go, now is the time to get someone in to see what it is all about, so they can kick on for next season.

“If they’re not going to keep Mo or Virgil or Trent, go and get someone else. If the club know they’re not going to sign, then now is the time to get someone in so they’re ready for next season.

“Preparing to be part of the squad, like I did, ready for next season so we’re right in the driving seat. Whether it’s a centre-back, right-winger or right-back. It’s as easy as that.

“Liverpool were good at doing that in my day. I think they should take note of what they did in the past. When a new player comes, they will have had four or five months bedding in. It will do them the world of good and set the club up well for the future if they are needing to replace these players.”

Despite Aldridge’s desire to see a new forward signed, he does feel a replacement for Andy Robertson could also be an option, with Milos Kerkez in particular catching his attention. The Bournemouth star has been linked with the Reds, with The i Paper recently claiming he prefers a move to Anfield over Manchester United or Manchester City.

“Milos Kerkez is a good player though. A really good player,” Aldridge said. “He’s been linked recently but wouldn’t know if it’s true or not, that Liverpool want him, as it’s only speculation.

“There’s always transfer speculation, Richard Hughes has signed him before. But we don’t know how much truth there is in it as we do have two really good left-backs.

“Robbo has been absolutely fantastic for us over the years, I can’t speak highly enough of him. But it is an area they could look at. And Kerkez is a really good player.”
