DJ Lagway injury update: Will Florida quarterback play vs Texas after hamstring injury vs UGA?

Saturday's rivalry loss to No. 2 Georgia was tough for Florida football fans to swallow.

Despite being massive underdogs for the annual matchup in Jacksonville, Florida, the Gators hung around with one of the best teams in college football. However, a first-quarter injury to freshman sensation quarterback DJ Lagway hindered their chance of an upset win.

Lagway's apparent leg injury was even more hurt than the loss, which required a cart to aid him off the field. The injury was initially believed to be severe and potentially even season-ending. However, Florida coach Billy Napier delivered an update on Lagway's status on Monday at his weekly press conference, which could delight Florida and college football fans.

Here's the latest on the status of Lagway with Florida scheduled to play Texas on Saturday:

At his Monday press conference, Napier updated the status of the star freshman quarterback with some potentially great news for the Gators and their fans. Despite initial fears of a gruesome injury, Lagway has not been ruled out for Saturday's game against No. 5 Texas in Austin, Texas.

"Injuries are one of the more challenging parts of the profession, coaching and playing," Napier said. "The good news is we've had positive information on that front. That is the positive there. We do think the injury is less significant. We do think there is a pathway to a recovery and a return. ... We have not completely ruled him out. A lot of that is to be determined as we move throughout the week.

"Soft tissue, those are the challenging ones right. I think the position he plays contributes to that. We're going to exhaust every resource we have. We're very fortunate to have a great group of people who work with our teams. It's really a competitive advantage for our players."

Lagway, the No. 7 overall recruit and No. 2 quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings, entered Saturday's game against Georgia with 1,024 passing yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. He completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Mizell to give Florida a 10-3 lead at the time of the injury.

Yale transfer Aidan Warner took over for Lagway and finished 7 of 22 passing for 66 yards and the game-clinching interception. If Lagway cannot go, Warner would be in line for his first start with the Gators, with Colorado State transfer Clay Millen backing him up.

Florida already lost starter Graham Mertz for the season with a knee injury. Napier said the team will monitor Lagway throughout the week.

"We're going to kind of see how that goes," Napier said. "I think obviously the position he plays makes that possible. We definitely — it's going to be pretty clear cut when we get to Wednesday, Thursday, Friday so we'll know. We did the MRI Sunday and got good news on that front."
