Djed Spence's confidence is in full flow right now following a consistent period of impressive performances for Tottenham Hotspur and that was on show in his post-match response to Manchester City's Jeremy Doku.

The Spurs full-back has been in fine form in recent months, scoring in the victory at Ipswich last weekend and drawing praise from Ange Postecoglou and also Pep Guardiola after Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City. To the dismay of many Tottenham supporters, Spence was rested on the bench from the starting line-up alongside captain Son Heung-min and midfielder Dejan Kulusevski.

All three came on in the 67th minute with Pape Matar Sarr, but by that point Doku had already made his mark as the 22-year-old caused right-back Pedro Porro all kinds of problems with his pace and dribbling. It was the Belgian whose deflected cross fell for Erling Haaland to score what would prove to be the only goal of the encounter.

Doku played the full game and won the Premier League player of the match award. When Spence did enter the fray after the hour mark, the Spurs man replaced Destiny Udogie on the left side, meaning the duo never got to tussle, leaving many fans wondering whether Spence's extra pace would have dealt better from the start with the trickery of the Belgian.

After the game, Spence and Doku, who spent time together at Rennes two seasons ago while the Spurs man was on loan alongside Joe Rodon, had a conversation on the pitch and swapped shirts.

Then the City man later posted a photo on Instagram of himself on the coach on the way home with the player of the match award with the caption: "Important 3 points secured and coming back to Manchester! Let keep it pushing @mancity Glory to God always."

It did not go unnoticed that within the replies underneath, Spence replied playfully with four simple words: "We'll meet next time …"

It showed Spence's confidence at the moment with his rising importance at Spurs and with new England boss Thomas Tuchel again watching him among others at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday.

The social media comment from Spence drew thousands of likes, no doubt mostly from Spurs fans, and plenty of responses from City supporters and all eyes will be on the duo next season when they cross paths again, perhaps this time on the same side of the pitch.

Guardiola also approached Spence after the game, playfully slapping the Spurs man in the face and poking him in the chest.

When asked what he had said to the 24-year-old Spurs full-back, Guardiola explained with a dead pan delivery: "Why you run too much? Should be more calm so the impact… Udogie is quite similar. The pace of this team? Pfft, it is difficult.

"Maybe Liverpool [are better], but Bergvall, every time he has the ball and run, unstoppable, Spence and Pedro Porro, Udogie, Kulusevski, Son, an incredible physical team with a clear idea to play. They play really good and they play without Romero and Van de Ven, two of maybe the best central defenders in the league."
