Dominant win reshapes tennis table league standings

A week of emphatic wins has reshaped the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League standings.

The results for the week ending January 10 show Ryde Rankers closing the gap on league leaders Ryde C, with a dominant 10-0 victory over Newport Vics A.

Graham Evans from Ryde was named player of the match.

Ryde C secured an 8-2 win against Ryde Goshawks, with Paul Rainford unbeaten, while Steve Mills from the Goshawks won two games.

Ryde B, led by Alex Rorke, won 6-4 against Ryde A, with Rorke winning all three of his games.

Rorke, alongside teammate Tim Giles, also won a closely fought doubles match.

Hugh Idle of Ryde Rankers leads the averages table with a 96 per cent win average.

In Division Two, Havenstreet B is climbing the table after a 9-1 victory over Ryde Rockets, with Tim Wakeley winning the only game for the Rockets.

The top two teams, Ryde Revellers and Ryde Detonators, also won their matches against Newport Vics opposition.

The Detonators defeated Vics D 10-0, while the Revellers won 8-2 against Vics C.

The match of the week was between Ryde Rising Stars and Ryde Quintet, which ended in a draw.

In Division Three, Wroxall Warriors lead the table after a 9-1 win over Shorwell Saints.

Ryde Retailers defeated Ryde Rustics 7-3, with Phil Stevens from the Rustics on great form, beating both the Cate brothers from the Retailers.

Joseph Millward from the Retailers was unbeaten and named player of the match.

Table tennis enthusiasts can join practice sessions at the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Centre at Smallbrook Stadium, Ryde.

The sessions are open to all and are held on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9am and 12 noon, and on Monday and Friday evenings between 6.45pm and 9pm.

The cost per session is £4 per person (£2 for under-18s), with bats and balls provided if needed.

The sessions cater to all standards, with daytime sessions more focused on social table tennis and evening sessions offering more serious practice.
