Jamie Carragher has criticised Arsenal's Martin Lerwis-Skelly after he mocked Erling Haaland's celebration during the Gunners' 5-1 win over Manchester City.

The 18-year-old defender was instrumental in Arsenal's triumph at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon, scoring a superb goal on the hour mark. After extending the Gunners' lead to two goals, Lewis-Skelly mimicked Haaland's iconic 'meditation' celebration as a retort to the 24-year-old striker's 'stay humble' remark to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta at the season's start when both teams drew 2-2.

Many on social media appreciated the Hale End graduate's flamboyance. However, former Liverpool defender Carragher was not impressed, and he believes Rice shared his sentiment.

"I don’t care that Haaland basically said to him in the first game, 'who the f*** are you? You’re a young player!' he said on The Overlap US.

"I don’t think Lewis-Skelly is in a position to be taking the p*** out of Haaland, who has scored 250 goals and won every trophy under the sun. If that was a player at Liverpool and I was a senior pro, I would say, 'listen, you’re doing amazing, nobody wants to knock your confidence, you’ve got great arrogance on the pitch, you want the ball in tight areas, so don’t get involved in that'.

"You’re not at the level yet of Haaland. I think Declan Rice was actually looking at him and thinking, 'get yourself up'. Stop showboating in front of the crowd."

Arsenal's victory over City put them nine points clear of Pep Guardiola's team after 24 games. However, Arteta's side remain six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also hold a game in hand over the Gunners.

City meanwhile sit fifth in the table, two points off the top four and a guaranteed place in next season's Champions League.
