Reading manager Noel Hunt has confirmed that the club have asked the English Football League about the possibility of making any signings in January.

The Royals are still under a transfer embargo, as they have been since 2020, and will not be permitted to do business until their financial accounts are submitted.

However, the club are hopeful that loanee Chem Campbell can extend his deal, having signed a short-term contract in the summer which expired this month.

A thin squad, with only 11 senior first-team players registered, youngsters from the Under-18s and Under-21s have stepped up to become regulars for Hunt's first-team.

Fears remain over player sales in the month of January, with five departing last year without the consent of then-manager Ruben Selles.

Speaking after Saturday's 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic, Hunt has confirmed that the club are in regular contact with the EFL to try and see if there is anything that could be done to strengthen this winter.

"We’ve got to ask the question, of course we do. If you don’t ask you don’t get. Brian [Carey] is well ahead with that and is in discussions. We want to do things right, but we have to ask these questions. Everyone knows the story; we just have to get on with it no matter what."

The window closes on Monday, February 3 at 11pm, a date which can't come quick enough for everyone connected to the club.
