Arne Slot admits he would like to see an adjustment to the match-day squad rules in English football to allow managers the ability to include 23 players instead of the current regulations of 20. With a fully-fit contingent available to him for Saturday's 2-0 win at Bournemouth, Slot was forced to leave Federico Chiesa and Joe Gomez on Merseyside, despite both being declared fit for selection for the fixture at the Vitality.

It's nearly four years since the Premier League announced that clubs would be allowed to name nine substitutes on their benches for games but European competitions allow teams the ability to select a 23-man list, which is something Slot would like to see adopted in England.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, where the Reds will attempt to overcome a 1-0 deficit, Slot confirmed he was yet to relay the decision over who will start between goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher and Alisson Becker and made the case for the squads to be expanded, claiming it denies players opportunities to feature more.

"I know [who will play] but the two goalkeepers don’t know yet," Slot said. "So if I am going to leave this room, I am going to go to the media next door and then afterwards I am going to inform the goalkeepers which decision I have made.

"That is one of the only things I don’t understand here in England. So everywhere around the world in Europe as well, when we play the Champions League, we can take 23 players to the game.

"And we are here in a country where we play the most games in the world - the likes of Arsenal, us, Aston Villa, Chelsea, all the teams that are playing in Europe - and we have the League Cup and the FA Cup over here as well.

"So we play so, so, so many games, so if you are able to play all these games, then you need a big squad. That seems fair to me and one of the things that is so important for a manager, to pick the first 11 is difficult but to tell someone they are not in the squad makes it harder.

"So I don’t understand why we don’t go to 23 in this country because this country plays the most games in the world and we only have 20 players that we can take to that game.

"It is not for the game because nine subs is more than enough but to keep the dressing room going, because you need more than 20 players in this country because we play so many games. So it is not for this one game it is more than for a team in Europe you need more than 20 players, so why can't we bring 23 players to the game instead of 20?

"But since it is the rule here, it is going to be the most difficult decision I have to make for tomorrow, not the first 11. But to leave someone out that works so hard on a daily basis that wants to be involved in the game as well, and not even taking him to the game, that is the hardest decision for me to make, yes."
