Former Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira claims Louis van Gaal scuppered a potential move to Manchester United.

Khedira, a 2014 World Cup winner with Germany and Champions League winner with Real Madrid in the same year, left the Bernabeu at the end of his contract in 2015 to join Juventus when he was 28.

United bought midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton for £25million that summer and Khedira's Germany teammate, Bastian Schweinsteiger, from Bayern Munich. Van Gaal had coached Schweinsteiger during his two-year stint at Bayern.

Schneiderlin was sold to Everton after 18 months while the injury-prone Schweinsteiger left soon after, moving to MLS side Chicago Fire in March 2017.

Khedira, who won five Italian titles with Juventus, visited Old Trafford as a youth-teamer with Stuttgart when they played United in the Champions League group stage in 2003.

"We played with the under 17s of Stuttgart against Manchester United and we went to Old Trafford afterwards for the Champions League game," Khedira told the BBC. "And I was like, 'wow, amazing players'. That was maybe my dream to play once for Manchester United.

"I can tell you they were able to sign me but there was one coach that didn't like me. It was the same coach of Bayern Munich that didn't sign me. A Dutch guy! But anyway."

David Moyes also made a last-ditch attempt to sign Khedira on transfer deadline day in September 2013 as United scrambled around Europe for a central midfielder.

United had missed out on a deal for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, failed to conclude a move for Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao and had offers rejected for Khedira and Roma enforcer Daniele de Rossi. Marouane Fellaini signed for United in a £27.5m deal from Everton.
