Droitwich Spa 4-1 Wellington: Saltmen return to winning ways with comfortable win
Droitwich Spa bounced back from a three-game skid and 10-day break in style as they comfortably saw off Wellington.
The Saltmen, who had not secured a win in three games, returned with a vengeance at Kingy’s on Tuesday (February 4) night, with goals from Charlie Tilley, Alex Dugmore and Ben Tilbury securing the 4-1 win in Hellenic League Division One action.
Perry Moss came close to scoring early, firing wide after pouncing on a loose ball.
However, it was only a matter of time before Spa took the lead in the fifth minute.
Moss raced down the right and his low cross was flicked on by Dugmore, setting up Tilley to smash the ball in from close range.
Cory Rudd then had a well-struck attempt cleared off the line, as the visitors' defence put in some heroic efforts to keep the Saltmen at bay.
Dugmore made it 2-0 with his 20th league goal of the season, slotting past the onrushing Wellington goalkeeper Jack Oxenham.
Moss was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Luke Bufton, but Droitwich looked the more dangerous side going forward throughout the evening.
Wellington pulled one back in the 35th minute through Carlos Moreira, who beat the offside trap and produced a fantastic finish across goal and into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 at the break.
The Saltmen were quick out of the blocks in the second half, as Moss saw a goal-bound attempt deflected wide, and Jay Sauntson went whiskers away from scoring his long-awaited first Droitwich goal.
They extended their lead to 3-1 on the hour mark when Tilley slotted in his second of the game from close range.
Oxenham then pulled out a great save to deny Moss, before Nathan Binner’s shot from the follow-up was blocked.
With just five minutes left to play, Spa's substitutes combined as Josh Hurdman’s low cross found Tilbury, who was ideally placed to touch home from six yards out for his first goal since returning to the club.
Droitwich had two more opportunities to extend their lead before the end, but both Matt Fusco and Hurdman couldn’t find the target.
However, on the balance of play, the score-line of 4-1 was a fair reflection, and the Saltmen returned to their early season form.
The Saltmen will now turn their attention to a league clash with Cheltenham Saracens on Saturday (February 8) at 3pm.
