Dual winner Royale Pagaille heads 15 entries for Saturday's Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park
Dual Sky Bet Peter Marsh Handicap Chase winner Royale Pagaille heads the 15 entries for this Saturday's renewal of the feature at Haydock Park.
Venetia Williams' 11-year-old is a real Haydock specialist having sealed five of his six chase successes at the Merseyside track including winning the Peter Marsh Chase in 2021 and 2022. The Rich Ricci-owned gelded son of Blue Bresil has also won two Grade Ones at the track, scoring for a second successive season in the Betfair Chase in November. Under Charlie Deutsch, Royale Pagaille landed a gruelling second win in the Betfair when outstaying Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning to triumph in soft conditions.
With that win Royale Pagaille's mark is now 166 and he will carry top weight on Saturday and may put several of his potential rivals out of the handicap should he line up for a seventh time at Haydock – his only defeat at the Merseyside track was when he finished second to 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero A Plus Tard in the Betfair Chase in November 2021.

Among Royale Pagaille's potential rivals on Saturday are two horses who have won over the Randox Grand National fences in the past in Bill Baxter and Chambard. Warren Greatrex's Bill Baxter won the Topham Chase at the 2023 Grand National at Aintree Racecourse, but has not won since – unseating when bidding to defend his crown in the Topham last April back at Aintree. Chambard – a stable-mate of Royale Pagaille at Grand National-winning trainer Williams' Herefordshire stable – took the Becher Chase over the big Aintree obstacles in 2023 but has also not won since and is now a teenager.
Four other entries among the 15 at Haydock have won at the track in the past. Richmond Lake – trained by Merseyside-born Grand National winner Donald McCain – landed a handicap chase over 2m4f at Haydock in March 2023 and has done much of his running over similar distances. He was fourth in the 2m5f Boylesports Grand Sefton Chase over the Grand National obstacles in November and second over the Mildmay fences back at Aintree on Boxing Day.
The Sara Bradstock-trained Mr Vango won his maiden hurdle at Haydock in November 2022 and scored for a second time over fences when winning the London National Handicap Chase over 3m4½f at Sandown last month.
Another 13-year-old – the Anthony Honeyball-trained Sam Brown – won the 2m4f Grade Two Altcar Novices' Chase at this Haydock meeting in January 2020 but has only scored twice since, the most recent in a Veterans' Chase at Warwick this time last year. He was 10th in the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury at the end of November on his most recent start. While the Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls-trained Trelawne also scored at Haydock in a Graduation Chase in November and was fourth in the Silver Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot last month
Other entries for the Peter Marsh Chase are Sam Thomas' former Welsh Grand National winner Iwilldoit; the Emma Lavelle-trained My Silver Lining; and from the Paul Nicholls' stable, Gelino Bello.
Elsewhere on the seven-race card there are 10 entries for the Grade Two Sky Bet Supreme Trial Rossington Main Novices' Hurdle at Haydock including Dan Skelton's course and distance winner Royal Infantry; the JP McManus-owned That's Nice – from the Nicky Henderson stable; and the Lucinda Russell-trained Derryhassen Paddy. The two-mile contest can be used as a stepping stone to opener to the Cheltenham Festival, the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
The first of seven races, the Sky Bet Build A Bet Handicap Chase is due off at 12.10pm at Haydock on Saturday with the finale, the Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Handicap Chase, due off at 3.40pm. Gates open at 10.40am and tickets start at £19.80 if booked in advance (gate price from £27) for the Grandstand and Paddock. It's from £34 (£39 at the gate) in the County Enclosure.
