Vicko Sevelj reckons bouncing back against Rangers would be a serious statement of Dundee United intent and could yet open the door to challenging Philippe Clement’s side for second place.

United have been left licking their wounds after the Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Dundee on Monday night. Jim Goodwin’s side are still sitting pretty in third place and if they could beat Rangers at Tannadice they would go within seven points of their rivals.

Sevelj said: "Now on Sunday we have Rangers and it's a big chance for us. We're in third now and we want to stay there and even go higher if it's possible. All of our minds are on Sunday. I am enjoying living here. We are sitting third as a newly-promoted team, so we're buzzing. We will give everything. We showed in the second half, we gave everything and we will do the same in the next ten games before the split. We want to keep this position and stay as high as possible."

United are still coming to terms with their cup exit but Sevelj reckons luck wasn’t on their side. Goodwin was unhappy that play was stopped before Sevelj put the ball into the net. United didn’t feel there was a foul in the first instance. Sevelj was equally bemused.

He claimed: “I was very frustrated. It's not for me to comment on these decisions. I didn't see any reason for it not to stand. I think the rules are known to everyone."

Sevelj also knows and on another night if United had taken their chances then they would have seen off Dundee. The Croat stated: "On another day, we score at least three here. We had so many chances, they had two or three clearances on the line.

"We didn't have the luck. The second half, we were so much the better team. We had so many chances but this was the day the ball wouldn't go into the net.

"It was a slow start for us and that cost us. I think for 75 minutes we were by far the better team and we should have won this game. The fans were our 12th player. The crowd was so, so good for us.

"I had two chances myself and I just can't believe I didn't score and the team didn't score. It was crazy. Their goalkeeper was great, but we should still have scored at least one. I felt if we scored one, we would have gone on and made it into the next round."
