Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard might be hearing from the English Football League (EFL) after his reaction to Leeds United fans following Coventry City's 2-0 loss at the CBS Arena, according to former FIFA referee Keith Hackett.

The incident occurred as the Whites extended their lead at the top of the Championship.

The ex-Derby County manager responded to taunts from the visiting supporters post-match by cupping his ear and making a scoreline gesture, seemingly referencing Derby's 4-2 play-off semi-final victory over Leeds in the 2018/19 season, which led to a final against Aston Villa. When asked about his actions at full-time, Lampard declined to elaborate, stating: "I don't want to talk about that."

Hackett, speaking to MOT Leeds News, pointed out: "The actions by Frank Lampard are not advisable and he may well receive a letter from the authorities giving him some operational advice.

"The police and clubs work hard behind the scenes to control and manage spectators. It’s so important for crowd safety."

There's no secret about the animosity between Lampard and United. Lampard was also a key figure in Derby's reaction to the 'Spygate' scandal, when a member of the Whites' staff was caught spying on Derby's training sessions ahead of their clash during the 2018/19 season.

Lampard admitted that his Coventry City side have to take their defeat “on the chin” after being beaten by clearly the better side.

The Sky Blues had themselves to blame for the manner of the visitors’ two goals as they raced to a 2-0 lead inside the first 26 minutes and had goalkeeper Oliver Dovin to thank for making several impressive one v one saves in the second half to avoid an embarrassing scoreline against a side that put seven past Cardiff at the weekend and could quite easily have done the same at the CBS Arena had they been more clinical in front of goal with the chances they created.

Asked if one of the biggest disappointments on the night was the manner of the two goals – the first coming after giving away possession cheaply in the middle of the park and the second when Jayden Bogle was allowed to dance his way into the box with Dovin spilling the ball in the process, Lampard said: “Yeah, maybe, conceding goals, we haven’t been doing it much and the nature of them, yes... The first one can happen, we’re trying to play and then obviously the spaces are different when you give it away and they hurt you straight away. And the second one is a mistake, so in that sense I guess the answer is yes.”
