Elon Musk would be a grossly unpopular Liverpool owner — and he's a Man Utd fan

Elon Musk being interested in buying Liverpool wasn't on our bingo card for 2025, but that is the case, according to the father of the richest person on the planet.

Errol Musk appeared on Times Radio on Tuesday, when he was directly asked the question: “Does your son want to buy Liverpool Football Club?”

Musk responded: “I can't comment on that, they'll raise the price! Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn't mean he's buying it. He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to — so would I! His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool you know."

There's no doubt that Musk possesses the financial clout to buy Liverpool, but whether Reds fans would actually want him to own their club is another thing entirely.

Firstly, Musk's values are not at all in line with the club's and the city's socialist values. The South Africa-born owner of Tesla and X, whose net worth is not far off half a trillion dollars, spent hundreds of millions of dollars on Donald Trump's presidential campaign last year, while he is also a supporter of the right-wing UK political party, Reform UK.

Musk's political views alone would likely be enough to turn the majority of Liverpool's core supporters off the idea of him buying the club from Fenway Sports Group; but if they're not, his admission that he grew up a Manchester United fan will seal the deal.

In August 2022, three months before the Glazers announced that they were exploring potentially selling up, Musk posted on X that he was buying the club.

When Musk was asked by an X user whether he was being serious, he responded: "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams. Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid."
