Elon Musk is worth £262billion – this is why he should buy Cheltenham Town
Elon Musk has been advised to sink some of his extreme wealth into Cheltenham Town – if he ultimately decides to invest in English football.
Musk, who is worth £262billion, has briefly flirted with an English club before, joking in 2022 that he was planning to buy Manchester United – a post which sent Twitter (as it was before he bought the platform and renamed it X) into meltdown. The Tesla billionaire was asked if he was "serious" about a bid, replying: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I'm not buying any sports teams." He added: "Stand-up is my side-hustle."
However, if the Donald Trump ally changes his mind about owning a sports team, he should look no further than the Robins, according to a football finance expert. Dr Rob Wilson, a professor of Applied Sports Finance at Sheffield Hallam University, says Musk’s ownership combined with the Robins’ location would potentially attract US fans to the club, reports the Daily Star.

“If Elon Musk wants to get into football club ownership, Cheltenham Town are an extraordinarily interesting prospect, particularly to the US market,” Dr Jones told OLBG.
“Millions of people in the US love British culture, particularly quintessential Middle England and the Cotswolds where Cheltenham is based.
“You've got these beautiful rolling hills in the background, you've got the racecourse so there is a really powerful story and a powerful narrative at a club like Cheltenham. They are up and coming and could be a great prospect.”
While Premier League is the most obvious draw for overseas billionaires with an interest in English football, lower league clubs are proving an attractive proposition too. Wrexham are the highest profile example, having risen from the National League to League One under co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
