Manchester United are set to activate the option to extend Harry Maguire's stay at Old Trafford.

Maguire, 31, whose current deal is due to expire in the summer, has been confirmed by manager Ruben Amorim as being part of the club's future plans. It had been suggested the centre back could be on Ruud van Nistelrooy's radar after the pair worked together earlier in the season.

Maguire had a successful spell at Leicester City, where he played 76 games in two seasons before leaving for Old Trafford for £80million. And at Old Trafford he'll stay.

"Amad [Diallo] is near, Harry Maguire, we are going to trigger our option," Amorim revealed. "I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve his game on the pitch, we need him a lot and he also has to improve as a leader, we all know the situation he had here, but we are going to trigger happily the option."

Under former boss Erik ten Hag, Maguire saw himself slip down in the team hierarchy and lost the captaincy, casting doubts over his future at United. However, since Amorim took charge, favouring a system with three central defenders, Maguire has enjoyed a resurgence.

Despite not donning the armband during Monday's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, with Bruno Fernandes suspended, Amorim praised his leadership abilities. "I think he coped very well with his struggles and when you look at our team, we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part and he has to improve our game and we are happy to continue with him."

Additionally, the club is reportedly close to finalizing a new deal with Amad Diallo.
