Harry Kane with Gareth Southgate at England training - England's Euro 2024 squad: When is it named and how many players are selected?

Gareth Southgate will today name his provisional England squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

The England manager is expected to select a squad of between 30 and 32 players, as he contends with numerous injury headaches.

Around 10 England players are expected to miss warm-up friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland because of involvement in the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

The squad will then be cut to 26 players in a few week’s time. England will submit the final squad to Uefa at midnight on June 7 before it is announced on June 8.

When will the England squad be named for Euro 2024?

Southgate names a ‘training squad’ today, likely to feature around 30 players to account for injury uncertainty.

A handful of those players will face disappointment when the squad is cut to 26 players.

The deadline for submission of final Euro 2024 squads is June 7, as teams must submit their list at least seven days before the opening match of the tournament.

What is the latest England news?

Left-back is proving a problematic position for Southgate after Luke Shaw suffered a set-back in his comeback from injury. Before the FA Cup final, his manager, Erik ten Hag suggested that he may not be fit in time for the tournament.

England’s second-choice left-back Ben Chilwell has also struggled with injuries, while Kieran Trippier endured a difficult season with Newcastle. Joe Gomez did play the position for Liverpool this season. Tyrick Mitchell, Lewis Hall or Rico Lewis could be outside chances.

At least one high-profile attacker is expected to miss out on the final squad because of England’s wealth of offensive talent. Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish have been England mainstays under Southgate, but face the emergence of Anthony Gordon, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer means increased competition.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane is confident he will be fully fit for Euro 2024, despite missing Bayern Munich’s penultimate game of the season through injury.

Kane suffered a back injury that forced him off during Bayern’s Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid and missed his club’s final home game of the season.

However, sources close to Kane insist his injury lay-off is largely precautionary and that he will “100 per cent” be fit for Euro 2024, assuming he does not suffer any fresh injuries.
