England slumped to a 1-0 loss against Iceland in their last Euro 2024 warm-up match at Wembley on Friday, with Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson's first-half goal giving the Scandinavian non-qualifiers a surprise but deserved victory.

Thorsteinsson scored in the 12th minute, finishing off a sharp break with a low shot through John Stones' legs to beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale at his near post. The hosts spurned several opportunities to equalise, with captain Harry Kane missing a golden chance in the 28th minute when he shinned Cole Palmer's cross over from six yards out.

But Iceland finished the stronger side and were good value for the win. England, however, looked flat in their final game before the Euros in Germany, where they face Serbia in their opening Group C match in Gelsenkirchen next Sunday. Declan Rice: England 'have to play' Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield

Declan Rice has backed Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold as a potential midfield partner at the Euros, saying England "have to play" the "special" Liverpool player.

He believes England cannot afford to leave a talent like Alexander-Arnold, who can also play right-back, on the sidelines at the European Championship.

"He’s special. We all know Trent’s skill set - his passing, the way he sees a pass, that right-sided [midfield] position suits him beautifully," Rice said.

"He can come in on to his favourite right side and see that pass like he does for Liverpool. It really does suit him, that role, but he went to right-back for the last 20 minutes [on Monday] and looked just as good there.

"He’s a player any country would appreciate. He’s a player we have to play, we have to get involved, and our attackers should be thriving playing off someone like Trent because his passing is off the scale."

Declan Rice warns Adam Wharton doubters ahead of Euro 2024

Anyone still unconvinced by Adam Wharton — Gareth Southgate’s wildcard pick for Euro 2024 — need only listen to the man he may start alongside in England’s opening game, writes Dom Smith.

It has been a meteoric rise for Wharton, who in January left Championship side Blackburn for Crystal Palace, where he has since turned heads.

England’s second midfield slot next to Declan Rice remains unclaimed, but the Arsenal man has offered more than a hint over whom he hopes to partner. “In training, I’ve been on his team quite a lot and [liked] the way we’ve played together,” Rice said of Wharton. “He’s come to Palace, been outstanding, and in training has impressed a lot of the players. He’s so composed on the ball, has a beautiful left foot, really crisp passing. He will be ready when called upon. He’s ready for the big stage.

“There’s a difference between players that are top-level players at 20 and players that are just on the cusp of stuff — and he’s really top-level. He sees a pass early. He plays simple, but beautiful, effective football. I can’t give him enough credit for what he’s done.”

Harry Kane question lingers as Gareth Southgate bucks England striker trend

When Harry Kane sat out March’s international friendlies, Gareth Southgate made no bones about the scarcity of the chance on offer to Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins, who were handed one game apiece, along with a challenge to make the understudy job their own.

“With England, that’s the landscape,” Southgate had said. “You don’t get hundreds of opportunities.”

The assumption then was that the Brentford strikers past and present were in head-to-head competition for one place in England’s Euro plans. Even with squad sizes since swelled to 26, precedent suggested Southgate would find room only for Kane and one other specialist No9.

At the last World Cup, in Qatar, it was Callum Wilson and, before that, Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Euro 2020. Danny Welbeck and Jamie Vardy both went to the 2018 World Cup, but England played a different system then, with Kane and Raheem Sterling as a front-two.

Why break with a formula that has never left England exposed and, by contrast, in banking on Kane’s ever-presence, allowed Southgate more flexibility in areas of greater need?

Marc Guehi must step up quickly to cover for Harry Maguire blow

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is now the leading contender to partner John Stones at centre-half at the Euros, and expected to be given more minutes tonight, writes Dan Kilpatrick.

Guehi, who was sidelined for three months until the start of May following knee surgery, has gradually emerged as first change for Maguire or Stones since his debut in March 2022, but he has just 10 caps — and no previous experience at a major tournament.

Southgate’s other options at centre-half are Ezri Konsa, who won his third cap against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, Joe Gomez and Lewis Dunk.

Brighton defender Dunk, sidelined on Friday, has six caps and struggled against Belgium in March, while Gomez returned in that camp for the first time in four years after his career was severely disrupted by a cruciate ligament injury.

Gareth Southgate cut his squad down from 33 provisional names to the final 26 earlier than expected on Thursday evening, ahead of Friday’s official Uefa deadline.

James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford and Curtis Jones were all cut, as was injured centre-back Harry Maguire.

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah was also dropped from the squad but, unlike the others, has remained in camp and could still feature against Iceland.

There are a few familiar faces in the Iceland squad tonight. Brentford's Hakon Valdimarsson is expected to start, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson, formerly of Burnley, is always a threat in attack.

But this is not the strongest of Iceland squads. Albert Gudmundsson, reportedly being tracked by a number of clubs across Europe after impressing with Genoa, is absent.

England are missing two defenders for tonight’s friendly, with Luke Shaw and Lewis Dunk both on the sidelines.

Shaw is still working his way back so will play no part against Iceland, nor in the Serbia clash nine days later. Brighton’s Dunk is also out for the Wembley game but will join full training next week.

It had been thought that the game could come too early for both wingers Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka, but both are now in contention to play.

Kane should start after his goalscoring cameo off the bench against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Newcastle on Monday night, taking back the captaincy from Kieran Trippier after a back issue that ended his season at Bayern Munich a couple of games early.

The likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Kobbie Mainoo are also back after joining up with the squad late following their involvement in the FA Cup and Champions League finals, though Bellingham will not be involved tonight. Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale will hope to impress in goal.
