England vs Slovakia LIVE! Euro 2024 result, match stream, latest reaction, updates after Three Lions comeback

England vs Slovakia LIVE!

England just about made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a remarkable comeback to thwart heartbroken Slovakia 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen. Jude Bellingham netted a sublime last-gasp bicycle kick to force extra time against the odds after another massively disappointing Three Lions display that looked to be sending the pre-tournament favourites crashing to an embarrassing last-16 exit that had echoes of their humiliation by Iceland at Euro 2016.

The end appeared likely nigh for Gareth Southgate’s eight-year reign at the helm before that piece of brilliance from Real Madrid superstar Bellingham that cancelled out Ivan Schranz’s first-half goal, with England then completing the most dramatic turnaround early in extra time thanks to a back-post header from captain Harry Kane. Slovakia applied a lot of pressure after that in a bid to save their dreams of a first quarter-final berth, but could not find a crucial equaliser of their own as England just held on.

Switzerland now await for Southgate’s men in the last eight in Dusseldorf next Saturday night after they stunned defending champions Italy 2-0 in Berlin. Follow England vs Slovakia reaction live below, with expert analysis from Standard Sport reporters Dan Kilpatrick and Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke.

Slovakia boss Francesco Calzona explains his angry bust-up with Declan Rice after the full-time whistle in Gelsenkirchen...

“Rice was supposed to go to the referees and say goodbye and then leave,” he said.

“I had to speak to the referees and he was carrying on, continuing to speak. Then he apologised and it all ended there.”

England ratings

00:11 , George Flood

Jordan Pickford 5

Is always annoyed about something, but had particular right to be here. Effectively a fan on the pitch for much of the game, tearing his hair out at the lack of movement ahead.

Kyle Walker 3

All at sea against Haraslín in the first-half and so loose in possession, too. Should really have been dragged at the break. A shocker for 90 minutes, but long-throw caused havoc for the leveller. Recovered composure in extra-time with some important bits of defending.

John Stones 4

Lack of communication with Guehi in the air led to Slovakia opener. Did as much arm-waving as anyone at lack of options. Dozing when Bellingham took quick free-kick, almost gifting Slovakia a second.

Marc Guéhi 5

Thankless task after being booked so early. Made a key block to bail out Walker but then went for same ball as Stones in build-up to opener and didn't track his runner. Great desire to win flick-on for Bellingham’s leveller, though.

Kieran Trippier 2

Hospital pass put Guehi in trouble and earned him a booking inside five minutes. Almost cleared the stand with one good opening and prompted boos when cutting back for the umpteenth time in the tournament. Limped off in the second-half.

Declan Rice 4

Game passed him by in the first-half, in both directions. Outshone by junior midfield partner until coming so close to equaliser when strike from distance hit the post. Stamina came in to its own in extra-time.

Shaw misses another England training session ahead of final group game.

Half-time in extra time

Remarkably, England are 15 minutes away from a quarter-final place at Euro 2024.

But they have to see this through - they have been dropping deeper and deeper, with Slovakia seeing a lot of the ball.

They should have scored there through Pekarik.

England 2-1 Slovakia

19:18 , George Flood

105 mins: What a chance for Slovakia to equalise!

A wicked ball from Benes takes a touch off Walker, with Pekarik in behind Eze as he misses the target from close range.

That had to be 2-2. A huge sigh of relief for England.

96 mins: Lovely hold-up play from Toney there to win England a free-kick.

He’s made a real impact off the bench.

England 2-1 Slovakia

This turnaround has been absolutely and utterly remarkable.

It never, ever looked like coming.

And then it did!

GOAL! England 2-1 Slovakia | Harry Kane 92'

19:03 , George Flood

92 mins: England strike again early in extra time!

Absolutely incredible - they’ve turned this around in the blink of an eye.

Eze’s miscued shot is headed to the back post by Toney, where Kane is waiting to head in.

England 1-1 Slovakia

End of 90 minutes

Extra time on the way in Gelsenkirchen after Bellingham’s last-gasp brilliance saves England.

Incredible late drama.

GOAL! England 1-1 Slovakia | Jude Bellingham 95'

18:55 , George Flood

Wow, wow, wow.

A corner is flicked on by Guehi and it’s an absolutely wonderful overhead kick from Bellingham.

Sublime. Extra-time beckons!

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:54 , George Flood

94 mins: Ivan Toney on for the final minutes of stoppage time.

Foden off.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:53 , George Flood

91 mins: Eze earns another England corner but again they can’t make anything happen.

England STILL have not had a shot on target today.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:51 , George Flood

90 mins: England have six minutes of added time to avoid an embarrasing last-16 exit at Euro 2024.

I am absolutely flummoxed that Southgate hasn’t made any more changes.

This is likely the end of his eight-year reign right here if an equaliser is not found.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:49 , George Flood

88 mins: Foden’s corner is punched away by Dubravka and Eze then gives away a very cheap foul on Lobotka.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Jordan Pickford caught the ball there and no one moved. England look knackered - why have there not been more changes?

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:47 , George Flood

87 mins: It’s so, so poor from England in the final third still and time is almost up.

At the other end, Lobotka shoots straight at Pickford.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:45 , George Flood

85 mins: A foul on Bellingham leads to another Foden free-kick delivery that is miles too close to Dubravka, who punches clear.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:44 , George Flood

83 mins: Finally Eze is on as England make their second change with just seven minutes left.

Mainoo makes way.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:42 , George Flood

82 mins: Eberechi Eze has been waiting to come on for an age on the touchline.

Still not on.

Laszlo Benes and Matus Bero replace Duda and Kucka for Slovakia.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:40 , George Flood

80 mins: Rice hits the post with a lovely strike from range!

Kane can only send a difficult rebound over on the volley.

Agonising for England.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:38 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Jude Bellingham looks absolutely spent. He can hardly pick his knees up as he tries to close down, then slows to a walk as Slovakia's defenders pop it around him.

England 0-1 Slovakia

76 mins: Foden is fouled and Kane sends a header narrowly wide of the post!

What a chance for an England equaliser as we enter the final 15 minutes in Gelsenkirchen.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:34 , George Flood

71 mins: A chance to take on some water and receive more instructions from Southgate as Suslov stays down in need of treatment for Slovakia.

Scores of substitutes warming up for both sides.

Still just the one change made by Southgate.

What is he waiting for?!

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:32 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

I've lost count of the number of times England have got into decent positions and then just hung dreadful, airy crosses to the far post. So easy to defend.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:32 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Dan Kilpatrick at Arena AufSchalke

Bukayo Saka said a day or two ago that playing him out of position at left-back was not the answer to England's problems and, yet, with 20 minutes to play he is the closest thing to a left-back England have out there

Incredible, really, that Southgate did not include an alternative to the struggling Shaw.

In the meantime, Palmer is on and looking bright. England on top.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:31 , George Flood

70 mins: Bellingham falls under the challenge of Kucka inside the box and right in front of the referee, who doesn’t award a penalty.

Right decision as a mishit ball from Mainoo ends another England attack in meek fashion.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:30 , George Flood

68 mins: England are starting to go through the gears again here, boosted by the pace and directness of Palmer

But that’s a poor ball from Foden that can’t pick out Kane.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:26 , George Flood

65 mins: Kucka with another yellow-card worthy challenge that is just a free-kick.

How is he still on the pitch?!

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:25 , George Flood

65 mins: Trippier is really struggling here and it’s going to be Saka to left-back as Cole Palmer enters the fray with 25 minutes to go.

An idea mooted by pundits such as Ian Wright last week that was shot down in many areas, while Saka didn’t seem keen while asked about it earlier this week.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:25 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

With 27 minutes to go and England's left-back down injured, Ezri Konsa is the man warming up.

Tells you all you need to know about Luke Shaw's fitness.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:24 , George Flood

63 mins: Slovakia fans are now mocking their England counterparts with the Iceland thunder clap from Euro 2016.

Trippier is now down and needs treatment following a foul by Pekarik, who probably also should have been carded.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:22 , George Flood

60 mins: Tomas Suslov and Robert Bozenik come on for Slovakia.

Haraslin and Strelec off, once the latter has received treatment for cramp.

England 0-1 Slovakia

60 mins: The card-happy nature of Turkish referee Umut Meler seems to have subsided since that frantic opening in which he was dishing them out like confetti.

Foden’s free-kick is driven straight into the wall.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:19 , George Flood

59 mins: Another brilliant run from Mainoo, who is brought down by Kucka.

He’s already on a booking. Should he be off?

Gareth Southgate certainly thinks so.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:18 , George Flood

57 mins: Two changes are now coming, but they are Slovakia changes.

Striker Robert Bozenik among them.

England repeatedly trying to pick out the head of Bellingham in the box, but Skriniar and Co are standing firm for now.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Francesco Calzona is urging his team to get up the pitch.

They looked comfortable sitting in in the first half but less so now.

England 0-1 Slovakia

54 mins: Francesco Calzona is roaring for his Slovakia team to get up the pitch here.

The whole second half has been played in their territory so far as England up the tempo.

Strelec nearly catches out Pickford with an effort from just inside the England half!

Good lord. Utter panic in the England ranks.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:13 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Hyper-critical perhaps, but Phil Foden has to hold his run there.

There's no way the Slovakian defender can get back.

Still, England look on it at the start of the second half.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:12 , George Flood

51 mins: Much better from England as now Kane goes close with a deflected shot that soars narrowly wide of the post.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:10 , George Flood

50 mins: England look to be level five minutes after the break as Foden knocks home Trippier’s ball inside the six-yard box.

But this definitely looks offside despite the celebrations.

The flag stays down, but the goal is rightly chalked off after a quick VAR check.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:09 , George Flood

48 mins: Not sure what the tactical changes were from Southgate at the break.

Same tempo and same fan frustration at the outset of this second half.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:06 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Can't work out if no changes is the most surprising or least surprising thing I've ever seen.

England 0-1 Slovakia

18:06 , George Flood

Back underway in Gelsenkirchen.

Gareth Southgate has made no changes at half-time.

England 0-1 Slovakia

75 per cent possession for England in that first half, zero shots on target and only two attempts overall.

About tells the story. Absolutely woeful.

As Roy Keane says on ITV, the time for excuses is well and truly over.

This has to change and it has to change now.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:57 , George Flood

No arguments with Gary Neville, who calls for three changes from England at half-time.

Also says this has ‘Iceland at Euro 2016 vibes’.

He also calls it ‘illegal’ that Alexander-Arnold is not playing in any capacity with Walker struggling.

Roy Keane calls it the biggest team talk of Southgate’s career.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

All the talk I'm sure will be about Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon at half-time, but I'd be sending on Trent Alexander-Arnold here because Kyle Walker is having an absolute howler.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Loud boos from the England crowd as the Three Lions trudge off while trailing at the break.

Huge improvement needed to stop their Euro 2024 dreams ending in shock fashion.

Southgate must already be pondering changes.

His eight-year reign is 45 minutes from ending in dreadful fashion.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:49 , George Flood

48 mins: A lovely run there from Mainoo, whose low drive is deflected behind by Vavro.

The corner is too high for Kane but England are piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser before the break.

Saka has a shot blocked and another dangerous cross is seen away before Rice wins another corner.

Kane mishits a volley and England are penalised for a push inside the box by Stones.

That’ll do it for a chastening half from England’s perspective.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:47 , George Flood

47 mins: Now Saka is taken down by Hancko to give Foden another chance to deliver a free-kick from a great position on the right.

Dubravka meets it with a firm punch and Skriniar hacks clear after Rice tries to keep it alive inside the box.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:46 , George Flood

45 mins: Three minutes of added time have been signalled at the end of this abject first half from England.

Slovakia captain Skriniar goes in late on Bellingham and has his name taken.

England 0-1 Slovakia

43 mins: A couple of smart runs from Trippier but he can’t be picked out.

Duda is then lucky to avoid yellow for a foul on Stones.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

The mood in here is well on its way to turning. There's frustration at the referee, at Slovakia's time-wasting, but above all, at England's abject performance.

John Stones and Gareth Southgate deep in conversation on the touchline.

Every time the centre-back looks up, he's got no option to play forward.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:40 , George Flood

38 mins: A very dangerous England free-kick swings in from Trippier on the right but is headed away and cleared by Lobotka.

Here come England again and a header from Rice is slapped away by Dubravka under pressure from Bellingham.

Vavro now down after being wiped out by his own goalkeeper and play is stopped.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:37 , George Flood

Here is the goal that has put England behind in Gelsenkirchen.

The Three Lions’ defence had remained resolute during their attacking struggles at this tournament so far, but that was dreadful.

One long ball caused all sorts of trouble and the defence narrowed ridiculously.

A lovely finish with the outside of his boot from Schranz.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:36 , George Flood

34 mins: Great defending from Vavro as he heads behind for another England corner before Kane can try and glance home at the near post.

Guehi is then whistled for a foul on Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka.

That looked harsh.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:35 , George Flood

33 mins: Bellingham slaloms his way into the Slovakia box and has blue shirts all around him as a cross from the byline is blocked behind by Pekarik.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:33 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Dan Kilpatrick at Arena AufSchalke

Loud boos around the stadium as Trippier cuts inside on his right foot (again) and plays a safe pass into midfield.

England are both loose in possession and desperately flat out there.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:32 , George Flood

31 mins: Stunned England are trying to rouse themselves here amid a lot of frustration from the crowd.

Saka gives them a bit more purpose but he’s not picked out by a poor cross to the back post from Kane.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:31 , George Flood

Guehi is carrying on for England after appearing to hurt his shoulder during an aerial battle with Kucka and receiving some treatment.

England 0-1 Slovakia

17:30 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

A lot of arm-waving from England players now, the man on the ball looking up and urging others to show.

They need to get the likes of Foden and Bellingham on it.

England 0-1 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

The goal there might have been a good result, to be honest.

Had Schranz gone down, Slovakia would have had a penalty and England would have been down to ten men. Looks like Guehi has a problem anyway...

GOAL! England 0-1 Slovakia | Ivan Schranz 25'

17:25 , George Flood

25 mins: Disaster for England!

Slovakia once again have oceans of space to move through in the opposition half.

The defence are shockingly narrow and Strelec plays a lovely little pass to slide in Schranz, who stumbles under pressure from behind from Guehi before stroking expertly past Pickford, who beats the turf in frustration.

Can’t say that’s undeserved. Slavia Prague winger Schranz joins Germany’s Jamal Musiala and Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze with his third goal of the tournament so far and a share of the Golden Boot lead.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:24 , George Flood

23 mins: England sustain their pressure following the corner but a well-struck volley from Mainoo fails to hit the target.

Encouraging signs though from the Three Lions.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:24 , George Flood

22 mins: Much better from England as Rice and Bellingham combine to drive them into the box.

There’s a barge in the back on Foden, who goes down shouting for a penalty but there’s nothing given.

Kane is then picked out by Trippier’s cross to the back post, but his header deflects behind for a corner off Hancko.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:21 , George Flood

19 mins: Slovakia’s latest attack is thwarted by a superb challenge from Rice that leaves Kucka in a heap.

Nothing wrong with that one.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:20 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Dan Kilpatrick at Arena AufSchalke

There have been glimmers of promise from Southgate's side going forward but Slovakia have had the game's two chances of note so far, and are finding so much space in England's half to pick a pass or run with the ball.

England 0-0 Slovakia

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Six fouls so far, four yellow cards...

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:19 , George Flood

18 mins: A bit more control from England now after another ropey start but the pace on the ball is still pretty glacial and there are some rumblings of discontent once more in the crowd as they knock it round leisurely at the back.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:17 , George Flood

16 mins: Make that four early bookings, three for England.

Haraslin beats Walker again all too easily and is wiped out by Bellingham.

Not sure there can be too many complaints about that one.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:16 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

I'll be stunned if we end 11 vs 11 here.

The referee had to get his card out there for the foul by Kucka having set the bar low with England's bookings but he's going to leave himself a decision at some point.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:15 , George Flood

Standard Sport’s Malik Ouzia at Arena AufSchalke

Gareth Southgate is absolutely furious with the officiating.

He's signalling to the fourth official that the referee needs to calm down, having dished out yellow cards for the first two fouls by England players in the game.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:15 , George Flood

12 mins: A third yellow card of this match already from Turkish referee Umut Meler, who is certainly not shy to go to his pocket.

Kucka brings down Trippier and joins Guehi and Mainoo in the book.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:13 , George Flood

11 mins: It’s end-to-end stuff at the moment but England cannot get a shot away after decent build-up and the chance is lost.

At the other end, Haraslin gets in as England are exposed again but Guehi makes a huge block and Trippier then scrambles clear at a crucial moment.

Bellingham with a poor challenge there but he avoids a caution.

England 0-0 Slovakia

8 mins: Trippier fires into row z after a lovely ball from Bellingham.

A few moments ago, another delicious low-angled Slovakia cross into the England box caused a lot more panic before going behind.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:08 , George Flood

6 mins: A fair old tempo to this early on as England are thwarted inside the Slovakia box and Mainoo joins Guehi in picking up an early yellow for standing on the foot of Ondrej Duda.

A big worry for Southgate to have two key players on cautions already here.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:07 , George Flood

5 mins: A typically worrying start from England as Juraj Kucka knocks well wide from the resulting free-kick after Guehi’s yellow as two Slovakia players collide in the box.

Lukas Haraslin then tees up David Hancko on the overlap and his low effort flashes narrowly wide of the far post with Pickford at full stretch.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:05 , George Flood

3 mins: An early blow for England as a hesitant Trippier puts Guehi in all sorts of bother, with the Crystal Palace defender then clattering into Slovakia striker David Strelec and having his name taken.

That’s his second yellow card of the tournament so far and cautions are not wiped until after the quarter-final stage.

Guehi would be suspended if England do get through.

England 0-0 Slovakia

17:03 , George Flood

2 mins: A bit of a sloppy opening from both sides, with possession changing hands quickly.

Pickford goes long early on and Bellingham tries to pick out Kane, but Slovakia clear their lines.

David Hancko then invites ironic cheers from the England fans by running the ball out of play on the far side.

England vs Slovakia

Underway in Gelsenkirchen!

England have never lost to Slovakia in six previous matches and will be desperate to ensure that run doesn't end in shock fashion today.

England in all white, with Slovakia in all blue.

Turkey’s Umut Meler is the referee.

Jordan Pickford does indeed keep his place in goal but it'll be one to keep an eye on in the first few minutes.

Aaron Ramsdale's still out there helping him get his gloves on, which you'd have thought was a one-man job.

England vs Slovakia

Looking around the stadium now, this is pretty much an England home game.

One corner of Slovakia fans to our left and other than that the cross of St. George is dominant.
