England set to smash attendance record for match against Germany

England’s women are set to play in front of a record-breaking crowd as the Lionesses official Twitter account announced their November 9th friendly against Germany at Wembley has sold out.

After plenty of teasing tweets from England players, it was confirmed the match should surpass the current record attendance for a women’s football match in the UK - set when 80,203 watched the 2012 Olympic final between the United States and Japan.

England’s current record for a home match is 45,619, also against Germany at Wembley, in 2014. If every ticket-holder attends next month’s fixture, that figure will be almost doubled thanks to the national stadium’s 90,000 capacity.

England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright tweeted: “Thank you to everyone who bought tickets but let’s make history together, BE THERE.”

This latest landmark is another sign of how women’s football continues to grow. FIFA, the game’s global governing body, estimates the World Cup in France earlier this year drew a global TV audience of one billion people.

England’s semi-final match also set a British TV record with 11.7m people tuning in to watch Phil Neville’s team lose to eventual winners the USA.
