English Premier League could slash January transfer window to just 2 WEEKS in radical overhaul plans
Clubs in the English Premier League could vote for a radical overhaul of the transfer window to minimise squad disruption.
Sides have been left frustrated with the lengthening of the both the summer and January transfer windows, with managers said to be fed up of the disruption it causes to their squads at busy stages in the campaign. The January window only slammed shut on February 4, whilst the summer window this year will run from June 12 to August 29 - closing a fortnight after the league season kicks off.
Despite a quieter than normal January window, clubs in England remained the biggest spenders in world football - forking out more than £260m on new additions, with underperforming Manchester City the biggest spenders. That was more than double the next highest total, registered by the Saudi Pro League, where clubs' spend totalled £118m. Sides in the EFL Championship meanwhile spent more than those in both Serie A and the Bundesliga.

Now, according to a report in the Telegraph, top flight chairmen are looking to make changes to ensure the window is only open for a fortnight in January once the action kicks off - and is cut down in the summer. Previously, in both 2018 and 2019, the summer window closed before a ball had been kicked competitively, but this was shelved as other leagues across Europe continued to trade until the end of August, after clubs expressed concerns that it left them at a disadvantage.
However at a meeting of sporting directors of the 20 Premier League clubs on February 6 the matter was raised again, and could now go to a vote of owners and chief executives next week. Reports add that senior figures from clubs will also open discussions with rival leagues across Europe on following a similar route - but stress that it will be a decision that can only be taken by each league individually.
