Enzo Maresca demands 'immediate' improvement from Chelsea star: 'He stopped playing'
Enzo Maresca has once again publicly urged “immediate” improvement from Chelsea winger Noni Madueke despite his key role in the win over Wolves.
The England international delivered a bright display at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as the Blues rallied in the second half to end a five-match winless run in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over relegation battlers that took them back into the top four, heading home the third goal on the line after Trevoh Chalobah’s effort after also providing a brilliant cross for Marc Cucurella to notch the second.
Madueke was undoubtedly one of Chelsea’s best performers on the night against Wolves, though his decision-making in the final third was still subject to some scrutiny by fans and pundits alike.
Back in December, Maresca claimed that Madueke could do “much more” in order to secure a regular place in his starting lineup and said he was not happy with his efforts in training.
"Noni can do much more,” the Chelsea boss said after Madueke had scored in the 5-1 win over Southampton, only his second goal since August that came after he had previously been dropped.
“He can do much more. The moment he starts to score or assist and is happy, he starts to drop a little bit and the reason why he was not playing is because I do not like the way he trained.
"He has to understand that he has to train every day good. He has to be ambitious. He scored one tonight, he has to go for the second one and the third one. He has to give more assists.
"But overall, he is doing great, he is doing fantastic. He is doing even better in terms of numbers. Noni has to understand he has to work more because he can be much, much, much better."
There was a similar assessment from Maresca after the defeat of Wolves, with the Italian claiming that Madueke “stopped playing” after scoring and had to improve on that drop-off quickly.
When told that the player could still improve in the final third, Maresca said: “Yes. He scored a goal but after he scored the goal he stopped playing.
“This has to be something that we need to improve immediately, absolutely. Never happy if you score one, two, you go for more and I think after he scored the goal he stopped a little bit playing and that is something we need to improve.”
Asked if his message about Madueke’s mentality was getting through after those latest comments, Maresca added: “We just try to always help them to improve and after the goal he was also probably a little bit tired, I don't know. But it's the moment that we need to go for more in that moment.”
