Enzo Maresca drops double Chelsea transfer hint amid Andrey Santos calls and midfielder injuries
Enzo Maresca has ruled out the possibility of Chelsea recalling a midfielder from loan in the January transfer window amid injuries to Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.
Maresca revealed on Friday that four players were doubts for Chelsea's Premier League clash with Wolves, including Fernandez and Lavia, who are both suffering with "fatigue or muscle problems". Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill too are doubts after receiving impact injuries during the Blues' draw with Bournemouth almost a week ago.
If Fernandez and Lavia are absent for the visit of Wolves to Stamford Bridge, then it leaves Maresca very short of options in the centre of midfield. Moises Caicedo is almost a certainty to start in SW6 with the Ecuadorian being a crucial part of Chelsea's team this season.

Apart from that, the head coach has Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka to choose from in the middle of the park. Dewsbury-Hall has not been in a Chelsea match day squad in the Premier League since December 15 where the Blues edged past Brentford in west London. The 26-year-old has recently returned to full training at Cobham, though.
Meanwhile, Chukwuemeka and Casadei have not been involved of late with both midfielders expected to leave the club before the end of next month's transfer deadline. But will Chelsea's lack of midfield options see them potentially recall someone in the same position? Maresca doesn't think so.
"No, because at the moment, we don’t know if it's a problem for them, just that for today they were out and we don’t know if they will play the next game," the head coach told reporters on Friday.
There have been calls from some supporters to recall Andrey Santos from his loan spell with Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg. The 20-year-old Brazilian has been flourishing in France this season, where he has scored seven goals in all competitions.
Likewise, Lesley Ugochukwu has been in good form for Southampton, albeit over a much shorter period of time. The Frenchman only played 209 minutes in the league under Russell Martin but it has been more productive for the 20-year-old midfielder recently. Since Ivan Juric has taken charge, Ugochukwu has played considerably more - already trumping the amount of minutes in a much shorter timeframe.
