Chelsea face a transfer decision over defender Trevoh Chalobah, with injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile leaving them short of centre-back options.

The injuries led to Josh Acheampong making his full Premier League debut in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at the weekend. Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi are the other central defenders available to Enzo Maresca.

As reported by football.london , that has led to the club considering ending Chalobah’s loan deal with Crystal Palace early. The defender joined the Eagles on a season-long loan back in August after being exiled from the Chelsea squad during pre-season.

Speaking back in the summer, Maresca addressed the decision to not include Chalobah in the pre-season preparations.

“First of all, from my point of view, it’s always sad to leave players out, that can be out of a pre-season, or can be out of the squad or out of the first eleven because in the end they all work for the same target, that is to be part of the same team,” he said.

“The Trevoh situation for me is quite clear, we have Axel there, we have Tosin Adarabioyo there, we have Wes Fofana who in these two weeks has worked very good and is finally back, we have some very young profiles like Josh Acheampong who is doing fantastic. It’s a sad decision but we have to take the decision.”

Chalobah himself has also previously opened up about his temporary exit from Stamford Bridge in the summer. He reflected on the 'challenge' of being left out of the squad.

"It was hard. With football, these challenges have to come, you can't separate challenges and success," he told the BBC back in November . "I've been through a lot growing up, I didn't let it affect me.

"Everyone can conduct themselves when it's all good, but I think it's when things are not going your way you've got to be really strong up here. Coming in, training, doing my own bit. I waited potentially, didn't sulk, didn't feel sorry for myself. I just got myself ready - and now I'm here."

Chalobah wasn’t eligible to face Chelsea at the weekend but has been a regular for Palace this season. He scored in his last appearance as the Eagles came out as 2-1 winners over Southampton.
